hi everyone.
has anyone got a alpex 4k or a nocpix ace h50r I could have a look through at night.
reels and clips aren't showing me what I want to make a decision on what to purchase.
I'm willing to travel or even take you out near me.
located near Warrington.
thanks Phil.

Chalk and cheese

4k is in my opinion one of if not THE best for low light performance without an IR source
I use mine without a torch
The night mode shows game as jet black against the grey of the surroundings

The LRF and ballistic app is immense

The benefits of NV for shooting outweigh the quick target acquisition of a thermal IMO

Thermal is so sensitive now you can see a clear target despite being behind grass, brush etc

The Ace is a very good unit
But the price point allows you to buy 3 Alpex!!

Do you not think much to multi spectral as in the dnt 635

hi edd.
At the moment I'm using an archer on a nighforce nxs and have done for 20 years+.
how does the 4k compare at say 300yds on 10 power to the archer.
can you see a fox clearly at this range for a shot.
None of the clips I've seen show this range and mag that's why I want to look through one.
Thanks Phil.

Archer , day scope and VCSEL IR wins for long range without question.

Stick with it if long range is your thing.

With any decent torch you can easily see and shoot targets well beyond 300yds
If the ambient light from moonlight or summer nights you wont need the torch

I dont use a torch so those pitch black illuminated shots are few and far between for me

I personally find switching to black and white night mode better in low light/without torch than allowing the unit to maintain a colour image.
The IR/UV absorption of fur means the targets show up much clearer in black against a grey background

Some videos:

358m 1030pm

346m 945pm

186m on zoom, no torch, pitch black

175m grey dark, no torch

100m pitch black no torch

I could mess around making the image sharper focus but tend to just get on with it
The extra weight of the throw lever I use on the objective someotimes means the image goes slightly out of focus from the shot recoil, but not enough to bother me

N.B. - before the keyboard warriors get excited, dates are upload dates, no male season in Scotland, night license in place,

Hi Phil,
I have a video of a fox shot at 580 something m with Alpex 4k lrf, on a .308. Would I have seen or picked up that fox at that distance, debatable, there was eyeshine. Having spotted the fox with a thermal spotter, I followed the fox in the scope from <300m, that's the only reason I could be sure it was a fox.
It was perfect weather wise, light winds and most importantly very low humidity. In my opinion, Medium to high Humidity is one the most common reasons for poor picture quality with NV and IR illumination.
The Balistic calculator, once tweeked is a game changer. I probably would not have taken the shot without it, as it required nearly 3m of holdover with a Hornady ELDX 178grn.
I'm not getting into the whole ethics of long range shots on live quarry.
If you are sure everything is good, the Alpex HD and LRF makes them possible.
Having said all that, about the alpex, the right conditions for long shots like that are rare.

However for foxing, I would never choose the Alpex over any of my thermal scopes.
For foxing my first choice is my .243 with Hik Stella lrf or .204 with an original Thermion XP 50.
NV can't compete with thermal for the quick acquisition of a target.

My advice is GoThermal, try before you buy, then buy the best your budget will strech too.
If you find yourself in Mid Wales, pm me.

I think I need to spend some time at the range. Way, way, beyond my abilities.
I was out at the weekend finally trying to get my ballistic calculator to work. It is great on my air rifle for ratting. Just need to sort it on the others.

As an aside the risk of shooting through unseen bjects with thermal at range increases significantly
Have seen it numerous times when out with thermally equipped rifles

have also seen first hand the risk when I am spotting with thermal and the shooter is using NV
I am seeing a clear broadside target and the shooter cant see it at all

The spiker in the video above looked like a hind to me using the thermal, the shooter ID'd the animal

unlucky fox:

very lucky deer! (misfire on factory ammo):

what scope were these shots with?
