Yeah I bought a thermal spotter... great deal from a friend of mine. I also have some non range finding binoculars. I just don't have the LRF at the moment.
Fully agree with not spotting quarry with a scope mounted on a rifle... and you're absolutely right to reiterate that point, so thank you.
Just to clarify (and so that I don't look anymore stupid after my initial idiotic idea), my question was about whether an additional digital scope to use as a monocular and range finder would work in place of range finding binoculars. I was not suggesting that the rifle mounted scope could be used for those purposes.
I think these are available but to be honest , if you have to range a deer at night your shooting too far ( all the std deer calibres should be well in range ) . 200 and some do not need ranging " study to get closer " as they say
fair enough... i thought i was probably over complicating things, so thanks for reining me in . I have Vortex Diamondback binoculars and quite happy with them as a budget / beginner option. Any ideas on a half decent LRF?
I use a Leica Rangemaster - tiny thing x25mm objective, great glass, runs on batteries for ever and I use it sparingly as I know what a shootable deer looks like in my scope - for range. Inexpensive and very good quality. I can’t range for toffee - so I stay within my limits. When I do guess and then measure it I’m c.20%+ out. That said, I know the drops on my rifles and I’m minute of deer/fox at ranges I’m comfortable with, so actual range is a nice to have. Better to save your money and learn to stalk in closer.
I told you that in confidence, any more slander like that and I’ll have you deported, I’m out now trying to make up for my error, it wasn’t a totally wasted night I managed a full bottle of wine when I got home

We have all done it. I spotted 3 foxes one night..turned the thermal scope on, lay down behind the rifle, cross hair on fox, red warning and off the scope went....headed home very annoyed but I fully admit to being an idiot
