Any pipe smokers on here?

It certainly is expensive. Not so much pipes as they last for years, but tobacco. Mind you, being a new comer myself (well, born-again) I've gone mad trying out all sorts to find my go-to blends. The perils of internet mail order. Think I'm there now though and the consumption is settling down. And I'm learning that certain pipes suit certain tobaccos more than others so I'm sticking to smoking only one brand in the pipe it works best in.

I've also learned that buying a pipe with your eyes doesn't necessarily work. Though a Chacom Churchill will have to be done when they're back in stock..

I know what you mean, I was always happy with my "cheap" Falcon! The way that I saw it was if you found a "cheaper" pipe (Such as my Falcon, which I still have) with the right bowl that suited you and felt comfortable in the mouth then why buy a more expensive one? As for tobaccos I was lucky, I explained to my local Tobacco shop/supplier what I "sort of liked" he was willing to let me have a half fill of a few and see what I liked best as he knew that I would buy regularly from him! I stayed with him with "Cavendish Black Cherry Exclusive" until I quit smoking. I still go and see him for the wife's roll up tobacco and we have a very high respect for each other as good friends!
 
I havent read the whole thread but a quick search showed this @ 900 quid a kg on an old page.

Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) has unveiled a limited-edition W.Ø. Larsen Hand Pressed pipe tobacco, priced at approximately €900 per kilo.

Setting a new standard of luxury in the pipe tobacco category, W.Ø. Larsen Hand Pressed is claimed to be one of the most expensive pipe tobacco products on the market.

The new blend was unveiled by STG at the InterTabac International Trade Fair in Dortmund from 16-18 September and will be presented to duty free and travel retailers at the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes from 18-23 October (Stand: Blue Village D10).

This is what surprised me most when I started with a pipe. I genuinely would not have believed it until I experienced it.

Definitely,

Thicker walls, temp of the burn, tightness of pull, length the smoke travels and cools all suits different blends doesnt it.
 
Indeed. And the shape of a pipe suit different people. You can't go by how they look, or even how practical you think they'll be for your particular situation. It's all down to how they smoke for you.

I've found that the bent billiard shape is the optimum shape that works for me. I can get away with a half bent Rhodesian is if it smokes cool. Straight pipes and sitters to me, are all a bit bitey.

Having said all that, I have a Barling Marylebone Fossil (which is a bent billiard), and it's kind of the M595 of pipes: it doesn't care whether you rest it or not between smokes and always hits the mark regardless of what brand you feed it. It looks unflashy and fairly nondescript but wasn't that cheap at £100, but you can stuff anything into it and it sure works for me. And it didn't need breaking in. My Tikka .308 is just like that.
 
Well, a lazy bank holiday wouldn't be right without the pipe, rum and cherry mix, a Labrador and a few busy burrows. No 17HMR today, 22LR and FAC air for a change. Who else is gauging the wind by pipe smoke?

I'm in the market for a new pipe and fancy something fancy.
 
This arrived yesterday, A nice wee Petersons. Not their biggest fan usually. I don't like P-lip stems and they make few 9mm filter pipes. But this is a 9 mm fishtail and it's a fine little pipe made from a very nice piece of brier and it smokes well.
Admittedly it did come with the inside of the bowl coated with what looked like ship's tar and the draw hole was actually blocked with it. But I've freed it up and it's breaking in nicely.

Funny you should say that. I bought it thinking I'd try some black twist in it. But I don't really like it. Don't mind the strength just not sure the tonquin flavour is for me.

Tried my favourite baccie in it, which is Gawith's Coffee Caramel, and it was OK, then tried the Exc black cherry and that was fantastic.

I've learned you can't just assume you'll smoke a particular baccie in a new pipe. You have to try all you usual blends and let the pipe tell you which one suits it best. With the Peterson it seems to be the black cherry.
 
I really do have to stop reading this thread, especially where there are mentions of Black Cherry Exclusive. I am so so tempted to go out and buy some and get my old Falcon out!

I could fill a jar with some BC smoke and send it to you so you can have a sniff if you like.
 
I used to smoke cigarettes in my teens but quit when I went to uni.

I tried a pipe once and I must admit I didn’t like it at all, but I suspect it was my lack of skill smoking it more than anything! Really sharp, lots of tongue bite and thoroughly unpleasant, and I’ve not tried it since.

The smell of a nice cigar occasionally tempts me but then I find if I get one I take two puffs on it, that’s the itch scratched and then I’ve got 45 more minutes with this thing I don’t really want any more of.

My grandfather used to smoke gold block in a pipe and I’d love to smell that again for nostalgias sake but I don’t think I’d go buy a pipe just to try it myself TBH.
 
I suspect a lot of people have been put off pipes for life after diving into it in their youth without really knowing how to do it. There are some very definite do's and don'ts to pipe smoking. From packing it correctly, to smoking at the right pace and cleaning and maintenance. And that's before you've experimented to find the pipe and the sort of tobacco that suits you best.
It's definitely a hobby that you have to explore rather than a simple habit.
if it's burning your tongue or making you cough and splutter, something's wrong.
