Approved land for calibre .243 Maximum

My stalking land is approved and I quote " for calibre .243 maximum".

Without wanting to trouble the firearms licencing dept. does this approval cover calibres of a smaller diameter than .243, even if they have a higher velocity and higher muzzle energy than a .243 ?

It seems a bit of a riddle with no logical answer !

Land is quoted as a maximum cleared calibre - so yes you can shoot 22.250 etc with no issue. It’s all a bit arbitrary TBH - ask them to clear it to 308.....!

As it specifically mentions calibre maximum and not velocity or energy I would think it clearly does cover any smaller diameter than .243...why do you ask?

If you 'trouble the firearms licensing dept' you'll likely just open a can of worms. As far as I can see, if the land is approved for a 'maximum calibre' than all lesser calibres must be accepted regardless of muzzle energy, velocity, etc.

Yep, means cleared for calibre rather than muzzle energy. All a bit odd.
Depends on your licensing department and feo as to how helpful they’ll be but I’d say it’s worth asking.
I’ve just had a variation approved for a 6.5x55 where my main deer permission was only cleared for .243. FEO was full of common sense and said “that’s ridiculous, I’ll clear it for all centrefire rifles now”. It’s worth asking! In the next sentence he said “I suppose you’d probably like an open certificate as well” took me slightly by surprise, but I wasn’t going to say no.

You must have caught him in a good mood !

I have ground that is signed off to .22 for pest control as it is close to houses and have used an HMR with no issues from my FEO.

Had an open ticket for a while but have never asked the question whether it supersedes the max calibre rule?

Its my understanding that an open certificate gives you the right to shoot anywhere you deem fit ?
Its a bit of a strange rule anyway as a 22.250 is just as leathal as say a 3006 or a 22 against a 243, I have heard 22 ricochets from head shot rabbits.

" for calibre .243 maximum"
use a straightforward simple interpretation .

Another annoying restriction.
100 gr .243 very safe......100gr .308 a no no.??
oh 6.5 mm thats metric..... whats that in inches?
Red Stags, big bucks...no you cannot use a .308 ??
OXFORDSHIRESTALKER seems to have found some commonsense. good.

There is no sign off requirement with an 'open' ticket - it is your discretion - and liability in that instance.

It sounds as though you may have the same FEO as me. Mentioned I will be shooting fallow during my land clearance and asked if I would prefer having a .308 than the requested .243. I did have to decline as I would be shooting more foxes than fallow and I know dead is dead but .308 seemed a bit overkill. He said no worries, if you do decide to go bigger it will not be a problem.

He did say my cert would be closed for a min of 4 years though and that’s something he can’t budge on too easily.
