I’ve been listening to some books by Peter Hathaway Capstick and really enjoy the ones that are narrated by Luke Oldham some of the others are narrated by Paul Maitrejean which I don’t enjoy as much. I listen to audio books on my way to and from work which is an hour each way so I really like a collection or series that I can really get lost in, does anyone have any recommendations?

John-Lewis Stemple narrates his own books. The Fox, and The Wood are both excellent reads/listens.

I too listen to audiobooks when driving. I have just finished the latest Cormoran Strike novel by Robert Galbraith (AKA JK Rowling). I have really enjoyed them and would thoroughly recommend them. Read by Robert Glenister, who is also very good.

Wilbur smith : Courtney series.
I second this. They are well narrated, even if there are some mispronunciations. Amazing stories and seem to be thoughtful and well balanced. Listening to these over lockdown prompted me to go to Africa and I would say they have changed my life. I think the secret of them is that the heroes are generally very relatable.

I have since met a man who after reading them, was inspired to take a risk by giving up his job and selling his family house to set up what is now a multi national business and another man who was also inspired to give up his city life in London to live in the African bush and manage a huge conservation project.

It is very inspiring stuff!

The Ballentyne series by Wilbur Smith is also equally good - just focuses on Zimbabwe rather than Kenya and South Africa.

I learnt a huge amount of history listening to them as well.

Another suggestion- but more light entertainment is the Flashman series by George MacDonald Fraser. Funny, but I would suggest not doing anything these books inspire you to do.

Though entertaining, the history in Flashman is very sound.
