And who has been the winner out of that one now china rules the world and we have to go cap in hand to them to fund our major projects the Chinese are in a win win situation , After all we continue to pay out huge amounts in subsidize to other sectors at least with the steel industry there was an end product

I went to a machine tool sale in the late seventies. I was bidding to my limit for every decent lathe that came on and it became evident I was the only unknown bidder in the room forcing the price up to my modest limit. After a few attempts they allowed me a nice DSG lathe. I was happy and judging by the back slapping among the others so were they.
Every machine tool was sold at a rock bottom price to one of the 'cartel'. Curious I asked where these machines were going, the reply,India, South Africa and other 'third world' countries. A complete loss to the UK and British industry.

The machines of British industry were stuffed into steel containers and sold by weight to scrap yards and then onto the third world.

When I was renovating a Morris Traveller, years later, you don't have to guess where the body parts came from, India. 'gies a job' lol,

Now that WAS the odd one out. Apparently profitable, just had a major refit with new furnaces and order books full  Some say (and I know a few that used to work there) that vast amounts of cash changed hands under the table due to all the new equipment being sold off cheap through the books

Crippled brily bonk that did oer kid, loik a bost in fizzhog wor it.

Yes ma mate, and every bugger knowd Black Country blokes wor the best grafters in the industry. Tragic, that wor a reel body blow. Bad for Bonk's and Holden's too.
