Barnes LRX chest shot deer

There was a recent post on facebook or a stalker that chest shot a deer through both lungs and the deer lived for 40 minutes. He followed up and managed to head shoot so he could see the what happened with the original shot. Looks like the bullet pencilled through both lungs with minimal energy transfer.

I cant find the post now and was hoping someone remembers who posted it as I want to share it with others I know who shoot the Barnes non toxic stuff.

It was Barnes LRX bullet in his 6.5x55. A 275 yard shot.

look under the term deer stalking ,ie get as close as possible. the shot was too far for the bullets velocity. any fool can shoot long range but stalkers get as close as possible. i have never been to scotland or any where i needed to take long shots but its better to pass up the long shots if you know you velocity wont/may not get the bullet to expand correctly.

Always desirable, not always possible, I have fields 3-500 m wide and between 600-1000 m long, arable crop with no cover. Trying to stalk to 100 metres is a literal waste of time.

With the cartridge named it won't be brisk even at the muzzle.
At that range and that placement of any projectile, the pointer (other dogs also available) is going to be delighted.
Exactly that.

2800-2900 at a real push from a sensible barrel, probably less.

What muzzle velocity would you need for Barnes LRX to expand reliably? I have two box's 127GR to try (6.5 x 55). Thanks.
For me, any copper bullet I work on 3000 fps minimum, ideally 3100 for plus.

It’s not a good combination to achieve with the cartridge and bullet weight you have unfortunately. You may just get there with a 120, double based / high energy powder and a 24” barrel. But a lighter bullet would be a safer bet.

Anomolies happen.

I shot a sika stag with a 147gr ELD-M 2950MV
Bowled it over
legs in the air, rolled down to long grass and didn't appear to move again

Due to the terrain and range we decided to go back to the truck, drive round to the bottom the valley it was in, and walk in to the shot site.
Took 45-50mins

Dogs found it in the long grass, as I walked up to it, he looked up at me, head fully mobile!
Shot had entered just forward of the lower front edge of the scapula, exiting just above the elbow on the offside.
Textbook high lung chest shot IMO

****er took a full aortic bleed through the neck and finally a blade to the atlas and still twitched like a fish when gralloching!

Aliens I say!

Chest shot through both lungs?? Such a shot really very little resistance to give major expansion to any bullet especially out at 275 yards. The 6.5x55 is not known as a high velocity cartridge with huge amounts of energy etc etc.

Lungs, once you get further back are perfectly capable of sustaining quite a bit of injury. There are only small blood vessels rather than major arteries. ( think a tree and you shooting into the outer branches). A punctured lung, which is what the animal sustained is not a quickly injury. Clotting will have slowed down / stopped the bleed and it may or may not have recovered.

Put that same bullet through the aorta, heart, large bundles of nerves further forward and the result would have been a lot more certain.

Rifle shoots a 1” group. 275 yards with a 10 mph wind, you could easily being putting a bullet a foot further back than you would like.

In Scotland a 10mph wind is a rare thing.

Up Tweed Sika are almost bulletproof. Use 7x57 140gr lead.

Post from a couple of years back showing reloading data from Barnes Website for lRX bullet in 6.5x55. Depending on powder max loads are only a little over 2700 fps.

Calibre isn’t the best for non toxic over 250 yards due to minimul muzzle speed. .308 might be the same. Ideally you need a fast calibre like .22.250 or .270 ect. They need speed. I’ve shot 1000’s of roe and red with .22.250,.270 and never had a bullet pencil through, from 50 yards to 350 yards. Nothing wrong with the Barnes lrx in those calibres but I can’t speak for slower calibres

I posted this a while back , he was 90kilo and standing on the hillside at just over 300 ,it might have been a tad more , he never reacted to the shot and I was just about to call it a miss and fire again when I noticed him take a step back so I waited and then he fell . The bullet was a Sako Powerhead in 270 130g , TBH it was the only time I had this problem and found the copper to be ok .

Some things are best left on the hill. was it the bullet, was it the calibre, was it a poor shot, was it to far, was it the shooter? ............
