Barrel condition

How does it shoot? What rifle/barrel/calibre? How many rounds? Was used for rapid fire target shooting or the odd deer stalk?

looks nasty, but I’ve had some brno’s that looked like a cobblestone street and shot better than a new sako

To speak of ‚two careful owners‘ is a laugh. Total neglect would be more to the point.

You are right on the mark sir. Worry about the barrel when it wont group, this is not too say neglect it. So a new can of worms, what is proper barrel cleaning and upkeep?

Have always treated my rifles and cars as a tool to serve a specific purpose. Clean when dirty to an acceptable level, make use of it and enjoy using it and get rid of it for a new one at the end of their usable life. Even have a rifle with pitted barrel with a bit of rust still shooting well and am yet to meet a deer who complains after taking a hit stating 'wish that barrel was cleaner'

For context...I am the second “careful” owner!
It was a used 308 barrel I picked up cheap on here.
Already showed some fire cracking and light pitting
Had it rebarrelled to 300 Norma Magnum (Andy Massingham did a fine job)

load development was hardly worthy of the term “development”
84gr RS70 shot and continues to shoot a ragged hole at 100 with 200gr ELD-X
The one pictured is a quick zero check.
it has shot significantly inside 1/2moa.
To date it has been stretch out to 1150yds (3 shots inside 5-6”)
Regularly at the 6” gong pictured at 726yds. (4 shots shown inside 6”)
And more frequently at targets between 350-500yds

it’s probably done 7-800rounds since I have had it
Range days with 20-30 round strings over an hour or so
Stalking with 2-3 shots in quick succession.
Cold bore shot has always been my goal.

it is by far the most consistent long range rifle I have owned.
I bored scoped it for a laugh having abused it through a season.

After cleaning it shot about 0.75moa higher than its last zero (no doubt because it was less like tarmac and more like a clean cheese grater inside!)
Then proceeded to pepper a hardox roe target in the head and neck at 300m with ease.
I posted this as a customer asked me bore scope his rifle to check condition and to estimate how long his rifle would continue to be accurate.
I showed him this.....

just because it’s shiny doesn’t mean it shoots.
Just because it makes you wince when you look down the bore, doesn’t mean it doesn’t shoot!

will be further abused until I feel the need for another shiny new pipe in 1:8” twist

So don’t look down the barrel other than to determine an obstruction prior to loading and clean infrequently?

Sounds like a Gun Shop owner’s worst nightmare on the rifle maintenance kit sales front!

You picked up a used barrel and had it rebarelled? Do you mean re-chambered??
Better?...

Ok my tuppence worth, Don't look inside your barrel shoot it don't let it burn keep your shots within reason of not letting it get to hot.

Clean it now and again for my 17 Rem say every 200 or so barrels are expendable but last a lot longer than you think.

Finally on a new barrel don't waste time and bullets running it in, total waste of time and useful barrell life IMHO just shoot it and enjoy, life is just to short and it's not barrels that matter much.

Its true that some barrels shoot when they really should not ! However the writing is on the wall that one day soon enough ......... !
I shot the same 243 win a period of some 20 plus years , it still shot but it spewed out blue patches every clean ( I never put a dirty bore back in the safe btw) . I decided to cut the barrel lengthwise including the chamber as a cut away example . There was no rifling at all for the 8" plus chamber i cut ! Someplace down that tube it found some spin though because it shot pretty good it was a rare group that wasn't good and misses on Game or vermin where rare .
I dont like the vast majority of recent rifles , they are all about accountant engineering i feel and second hand rifles of the past are just too cheap to pass up and sort
