Barrel cost/work/time query.

Barrels are like tyres on a high performance car. They wear out and probably cost a similar amount to replace!

I do agree with you on this they are a replaceable component so just get out and shoot it. Once it’s done replace it. Yes I know you guys have to proof your barrels but it is worth it for a custom barrel to be fitted.
 
Paid £1250 for my 22-250 to be done and it shoots nearly as good using ppu vs my 6.5x55 202 with hand loads. The smith I used seems to have a bad reputation as unprofessional but he was brilliant walked me through all the options advised me on things and always rang me back. The only thing that let the operation down was bloody parcelforce 😂

Seems to be a lot of differing pricing for barrels here, I presume you had a high end barrel fitted? At least it’s accurate for sure regardless of reputation.
 
With quality checks (every step, every check, every time) and pre-maching activities (vudoo) i take about 6 hours to fit a barrel, that includes blended thread cap. Normally do it in 3 x 2 hour stints to avoid fatigue and errors and only work when i want to. Time served apprenticeship in highly regulated industry, working in converted, insured, secured and alarmed/monitored double garage with correct PI, PL snd EL insurance that covers me to build rifles, weapons of mass destruction and Nuclear power plants amongst other more normal engineering activities. I could knock them out quicker if i lowered the quality checks and did them in one session but im in it for the quality and results, not the profit. My gunsmithing rate is less that my rate for my day job. My prices are comparable to the industry norms and i’d like to think the level of customer service is as high as anybody else, if not higher. Currently moving premises but looking forward to getting the new workshop up and running in a couple of months or so.

If moving out of your garage and into a unit, are we expecting to see a rise in prices of work, to meet the extra costs involved, or do you plan to keep them the same?

When I worked in a tool room, my mill was manual (no dro no power feed) we started at 7 so got there 10 to 7 switched all the machines on so they ran and warmed up grabbed a small coffee and started making chips.
The grinders worked in tenths and under the jig bores to their spec then the miller turners the spec on the drawing.
You finished one job/batch, cleaned down the machine then went and got the next drawing cut off the material or it was cut and in a metal tray and started blocking out the next job. 5 days a week, weekends I would help Dad on a building extension digging footings running the mixer doing the block work. Fatigue...what's that lol

Be brave Tim, I would buy another rifle just for you to re barrel, you would make an awesome spout 😂😂😂😂
