BASC. An investment idea?

surely if basc buys land similar to how RSPB does and manages it to bring an income it kills two birds with one stone.

1 secures shooting
2 provides assets for BASC
3 sustained income
4 keeps countryside as countryside not houses

ok 4 birds and potentially provide more rural £s in the economy.

 RSPB killing birds!

In all seriousness I think the BASC needs to have some form of trust / vehicle that buys land and rents it out to clubs / syndicates. Most wildfowling clubs are quite small and I'm not sure are capable of the financial resources and management for serious land purchase. However, they are quite used to paying rent for shooting rights. So, the trust rents to the shooting rights out, collects the rent and reinvests "profit" into more land purchases. Only thing that slightly worries me is how do we set it up to keep HMRC's grubby mitts off the money...

Morning all,

Labrat, thank you, I take your point. But some will choose to join a syndicate for example to help spread the cost, some will pay for a day here or there just like they do with the BASC stalking schemes. We are looking at developing more stalking schemes around the country not least of all because the existing schemes are so popular.

Others will be lucky enough to get low cost or very cheap stalking. Its those who I would suggest need to formalise their shooting agreements. One of the most common complaints I hear is from a member who's had free shooting for years and someone else comes along and offers the farmer a few £ for the shooting rights...

You are correct scumbag that one issue is how is a land purchase schemes set up so that future income is kept out of the hands of the HMRC - that's way out of my knowledge but better brains than me will look at this .

A trust fund that exists to lend or grant money for land purchase already exists, its called the WHT. Although mainly wildfowling clubs have used it over the years, any BASC shoot can apply for a grant or loan.

Steyer, I agree with you, but in real terms the amount of money that we have to spend, even if we liquidated all our assets, would not buy loads of land, but that doesn't mean for a moment that we should not do it! However, its better in terms of getting more land in the hands of shooters - or at least the shooting rights - to help existing BASC clubs, syndicates and individual members to get a formal lease of shooting agreement in place.

In summary there is a range of things that BASC can deliver on to help members secure shooting, buy some land, rent some land with shooting rights, help members buy land, help members rent land with shooting rights.

David
