Really Good question.
There are 3 main types of baselayer. How active you are will determine which baselayer to use. Baselayer is not a one type fits all product.
First of all, modern baselayers much be close fitting to draw the moisture of your skin. If they are loose they will not work. Do not wear cotton under baselayer, but on top.
The following applies to the UK climate, so call us if you are going abroad and need advise.
Type
One: Regular Polyester: This baselayer will hold onto more moisture and is ideal for high levels of activity which will generate heat to keep drying it. The major down side to this product is that it when your stop and sit down for a while, the moisture will cool and you will start to feel cold and will also pick up an odour which cannot be washed out.
Two: Micro Polyester: Like type one, but better at letting go of moisture, so designed for moderate activity but will again pick odour
Three: Polypropelyne: A totally different fibre and excellent at wicking. Will never pick up an odour. Designed for low levels of physical exertion, like tree seat work or stalking.
Four: Dual Knit Polyamide Polypropelyne...
Five: 100% Merino
Six: Merino Blends
etc
So there is more to baselayer that meets the eye. All have great properties, but as a rule of thumb, the cheaper they are the more phyical activity is required to get the best out of them.
