Beater’s Day (correct apostrophe)

Our one and only beater to survive the entire season on these hills was entitled to Beater’s Day today. Formerly Beaters’ Day but given the second best attendance was my eight year old, there was a concerted effort to get our beater under some birds. He is only 19 and has never been on a game shoot before this season. We all chipped in and bought him boots early in the season as a reward for his dedication. Spare slots were filled in with regular guns today but the focus was getting him his first bird. We have been practicing with him with the clay trap since the summer and so he was delighted to have the opportunity. He’s from a none shooting family and works as a labourer for one of the guns, great lad.

He discovered that game shooting is far harder than shouting pull, but late this afternoon he killed a hen dead first barrel and was delighted.

Nice to see the young lad getting stuck in although not from a shooting background it’s in his blood.
My self the son of a keeper I’m the only one out of there brothers that from a very young age was always out with my dad fair play for the encouragement long my it continue.

Well done for introducing new people to shooting, I hope he sticks with it. Also great to have all ages and genders represented. I see your shoot is as damp this year as our little one! Reminds me I need to write up my season highlights.

What a lovely story. I love the community spirit. My son is 14 and aspires to shoot (also from a non shooting family). I’m looking for an opportunity for him to become a beater within commuting distance of London. He absolutely loves the sport and is responsible unlike many of the teens these days.

There are a lot of shoots close to Guildford
