Guys I've just put a deposit on a 595 tikka in 308..can anyone point me to what moderator to go for...it's 1/2 unf....
There isnt one ! Smaller volume are lighter and large volume are more heft but the larger and the more baffles the better. I run an original T8 its been on three rifles and had many thousands of rounds through it even though its only thin steel , i also have an MAE scout less volume more baffles in stainless its very good also and somewhat better made ( i just use it on the 22 hornet and 223 rem) its all you need volume wiseGuys I've just put a deposit on a 595 tikka in 308..can anyone point me to what moderator to go for...it's 1/2 unf....

Balance on your rifle will be different to another's rifle , i wouln't bother weighing because balance is the important bit on YOUR RIFLE . the further away the mass is the heavier it feels , put a lump of lead in the stock Butt and the front end feels light also . long barrel and most moderators make the rifle front heavy and vice versa shortened barrels.A German gun magazine answered the question quite well a few years back by rating a moderator by sound reduction and a rating of sound reduction relativ to the weight. Meaning db per gram weight. Hausken JD224 was the winner back then. Wasn't the quietest or lightest but the least bang for it's weight.

Believe me we are working on rifle balance since several years, even have a patent awarded early this year on the subject. At the moment we are working on a PRS rifle for the next Worlds and UK comps. This and taking into account the choice of rifle balance of the German "royal" driven game shooter's rifle we seem to think that what the normal hunter thinks is a nice balance actually won't shoot well. Bit like longer barrels on a shotgun rifles seem to shoot better being slightly front heavy. That Prince in Germany had a 26" heavy barrelled rifle btw. Of course you are right that a rifle should not be over cooked in weight or balance because the stalker needs to get to the deer in the first place without being knackered. Heavy mod is mostly awkward when the rifle is shouldered. Now, quite a few deer stalkers use tripod mounts, which are best set up in the balance point of a rifle which brings the COG further forward compared to a "normal" stalking rifle as well.Balance on your rifle will be different to another's rifle , i wouln't bother weighing because balance is the important bit on YOUR RIFLE . the further away the mass is the heavier it feels , put a lump of lead in the stock Butt and the front end feels light also . long barrel and most moderators make the rifle front heavy and vice versa shortened barrels.
I have become a fan of shorter barrels , its amazing what 3-4" off a barrel can do for a rifle that is to have a moderator fitted.
Speed isn't that relevant in stalking unless you take radical amounts off a std barrel the velocities dont suffer much at as many think and using a slightly faster powder can often get a fair amount back
