Best deer hunting knife

I have a spyderco bushcraft uk, 01 tool steel scandi grind 4” blade- this knife is too thick for skinning Imo. I now use spyderco south fork 5” blade Phil Wilson design. the grinde is much more shallow- despite both being similar back spine thicknes, this is what makes it a better slicer/ skinner. Something to consider when choosing. Also a curved blade vs drop point helps too. Loads of option out there but look at the angle of grind in relation to spine thicknes.

What’s the best deer hunting knife?
What’s the best grind to use?
I have a nice bushcraft knife that’s a scandy grind drop point. Not sure how good it’ll be for deer, but thought it maybe ok?
Likely be fine so try it, see what you don't like and buy/build/commission accordingly.
Much like rifles a huge part of this is personal bias.

May I suggest it will depend on the size of your hands...?

If youre mainly doing muntjac, you might be better off with something without much blade depth and with a bit of a point... for coring.

Also get a leather strop / old rough belt. It really makes the difference stropping a blade.

It’s not subjective at all. The best deer stalking knife is a Fallkniven f2z. Good steel and a convex grind. Mora knives are for spoon whittlers.

What suits a Red Stag doesn’t necessarily suit a Muntjac Kid. My go to is my Alan Wood mini-hunter. Holds a razor edge, small enough for Roe but equally at home with the larger species. Remember you don’t need a be massive blade, you’re only cutting skin and tissue.

EKA Swede 8 or 9 or an EKA swing blade that does two jobs well but requires a sheath that comes with it. Knives are a little like rifles you do get what you pay for but beyond a certain price point it’s more about Brand and the beholder IMHO

See it is entirely subjective…

I have this knife. I like it for butchery, but just couldn’t get on with it as a field knife.

I would say the two criteria I now rate above all else are grippy handle when wet/covered in blood, and ease of cleaning.

Everything else is a ‘flavour of ice cream’ type argument.

I can recommend Buck knives if its any help. The Alpha hunter- well shaped handle, good blade with guthook. Used for 20 years. My other Buck, a 112FG, knockin on 40 years use...not bad.

Best knife I have had is a Normark Hunter. Had it 30 years and still works just fine. It has a long thinner blade that I find gets into the atlas joint like no other knife I have ever tried. Used on Roe, Muntjac, Fallow and Sika. Only problem is I just miss placed it last weekend!! Its at home somewhere. Sure it will turn up. Always has in the past.
Not my only knife of course but just the go to and wouldn’t have cost me much at the time I got it.
Still favour a thinner drop point, grind not important but thats just Me.

That’s a blast from the past. I had one as a young teenager but swapped it for a Panasonic pocket sized radio. What an idiot. I wish I still had it. I have the equivalent filleting knife as a consolation.

Or skinning bulls if you leave your other knife at home

You don't hunt deer with a knife ;)
I am always amused when posts ask for 'best stalking knife' or 'best stalking trousers' or' best stalking boots'.
Lots of Branded products are sold at highly inflated prices exactly to cater for this market.
Wack a logo of a nice pair of antlers on the knife/trousers/boots and suddenly the marketing-men have created a 'stalking' etc.

In my view these are the requirements for a knife used to gralloch deer:
1. It has to be very sharp
2. It has to be very easy to clean
3. It has to be very cheap
4. It has to be between 4-6" depending on your personal preference
5. It has to have a handle that you feel is comfortable.
6. It has to be secure in its sheath.

Widely available for around £7.50-£15

Good knife and have one but but but, snapped the tip off on a Roe. I ground the tip back but now its really to short!
