Best mod for 22-250

Hi all,

Bit late to the party on this thread but I'm hoping some of you might be able to offer your experience.

I'm in the market for a moderator to use on a 22-250 and had been considering DPT.

Having discussed with an RFD they've advised for 22-250 calibre to opt for a 6mm DPT moderator (i.e. for 6mm calibre – not bore diameter). Allegedly this has come from DPT, and it's not recommended to use their .22 centrefire moderator for use on a 22-250.

I’ve always been of the understanding sound reduction will be improved the closer match between projectile diameter and moderator bore diameter. Which has led to this query.

I found a few other threads which suggest DPT moderator bore diameters will be approx. 1mm to 1.2mm larger than the intended calibre projectile diameter, allowing for circa 0.5mm radial clearance. I have a .30 calibre DPT moderator which matches that thought i.e. 8.95mm moderator bore to suit a 7.82mm projectile.

If it’s true and the 6mm DPT moderator is the one to go for on a 22-250 I’d guess the moderator bore diameter will be around 7.38mm and the 22-250 projectile is circa 5.70mm i.e. 0.84mm radial clearance.

Does anyone have experience with this and if so, any complaints in relation to the moderator’s effectiveness compared with other options?

Or perhaps there’s a few of you using .22 calibre DPT moderators on 22-250’s? Interested to hear your thoughts too, does it get much use, any issues experianced?

I have emailed DPT direct for their thoughts and to verify RFD recommendations.

That's nonsense. I run a 20 calibre DPT on a 22-250, on the advice of the UK distributor. My threading job was by an outstanding rifle smith, though, so is very concentric...

Very happy with a Hausken on my 22-250 JD224. Much quieter than a 6.5CM with the same mod.
