Best scope for around £1200?

Each to their own but I would suggest you want two entirely different things.

A scope for stalking? I would want something light, 40mm objective, simple reticle, medium magnification, no parallax/ side-focus. For that S&B, Swarovski, Kahles - all of them pre-owned provided they were in good order, never bought new.

A scope for the range? Something chunky, 56mm objective, busy reticle with lots of aim and measuring points, high magnification, first focal plane, mil, side focus/parallax, throw lever, sunshade, zero stop, lockable but exposed turrets. For that Meopta, Vortex, Bushnell XRS, March, IOR et al, all the best of the range, never pre-owned, never used.
 
For me the delta Stryker is the way to go, I have the 4.5-30 x 56 FFP with the LRD 1 Reticle, it’s more designed for target but works perfectly fine for stalking. I fact I do more stalking than target these days and I see no issues with it at all and it tracks perfectly. Lucky for you they have dropped in price as well from £1600 to £1300 on opticswarehouse. As for heavy, nope not at all or not for me anyway, just make sure it works for your eyes though as one of my mates hates it and another loves it when shooting my rifle.

I have the delta and it’s a great scope. Mine was c£850 I think but that was a few years ago.
Good glass, but in low light you will struggle to dial in 30x mag as it simply won’t let the light in.
Other than that, great scope.

Sounds like you may have one of the older generation scopes I would presume the newer strykers have better glass but agree they are great scopes.

Works well for me... Generally know we're deer are coming out. Range it and diall into the scope.... If it's a few yards either way it's still point and shoot. Can be a little distracting at last light. Deer being unpredictable as well and a quick turret dial the digital display can be bright and a little white out with glare from it. Minimum setting is 10 seconds for the display to switch off. Not a major issue. Illuminated ret is nice with 4 different brightness settings.... Nice glass.. Pretty sharp

Had a PMII; sold a PMII. Now use an Element Optics Nexus GenII for a lot less cash with zero performance loss and a more robust guarantee should it break. Same with Vortex scopes. Have seen the PST used at Bisley out to 1000 yds hitting the bull no problem. Not bad at all. Both makes are hard to ignore for the dual purpose you are considering. Both types come up for sale here from time to time.
