Best scope for around £1200?

Had a PMII; sold a PMII. Now use an Element Optics Nexus GenII for a lot less cash with zero performance loss and a more robust guarantee should it break. Same with Vortex scopes. Have seen the PST used at Bisley out to 1000 yds hitting the bull no problem. Not bad at all. Both makes are hard to ignore for the dual purpose you are considering. Both types come up for sale here from time to time.
Thank you 🙏

A scope for stalking? I would want something light, 40mm objective, simple reticle, medium magnification, no parallax/ side-focus. For that S&B, Swarovski, Kahles - all of them pre-owned provided they were in good order, never bought new.

A scope for the range? Something chunky, 56mm objective, busy reticle with lots of aim and measuring points, high magnification, first focal plane, mil, side focus/parallax, throw lever, sunshade, zero stop, lockable but exposed turrets. For that Meopta, Vortex, Bushnell XRS, March, IOR et al, all the best of the range, never pre-owned, never used.

You've got the objective size the wrong way round, surely? A 40mm is fine on the range because you don't need the extreme light-gathering ability of a 56. People will probably disagree with me but I would also say that you can get away with cheaper glass on the range for exactly the same reason.

I have an S&B 3-12x56 for stalking and an Element Optics 6-24x50 FFP for the range. One scope for both would be an annoying compromise. It's been fine switching scopes without needing to re-zero using a rail and QR mounts- so that's another option.

Well out of your budget new. Jus in it used

Well my permission is for a 308 hunting rifle and all the advice I've had to date is to buy a Tikka. I'd rather buy once and buy well.
They’re good rifles, and accurate, but dreadfully boring - everyone, literally everyone has one (for a reason). What about the Benelli Lupo and two scopes, one for target and one for stalking? @Edinburgh Rifles have them in at some cracking deals.

Tikka, for the money, are hard to beat
Are they though? If buying new they are a lot of money now…compared to a custom from Edinburgh rifles or be precision or someone I reckon buying one new is hard to justify.

Sure second hand they can be excellent value.

They are also the Ford mondeo of rifles in the uk…make of that what you will 😂😂😂
