Right, well in anticipation of the imminent arrival of my first rifle, I have just ordered a set of the Decoy double sticks with the 360 degree swivelling top from Ardmoor.co.uk. A bargain at £54.95. Sort of. Assuming they do as good a job as I think they will.

Aldi do a good camera tripod at right money and is easily converted.
PS avoid the Burgers.

I broke my Deerhunter twin sticks a couple of months back... One of them refused to retract, and in a hissy fit I broke it. Anyway, I find that the singe remaining stick is much lighter, quieter and far easier to deploy, and having nailed 2 roe doe within 60 seconds in early December, obviously works. Cheers i.

I just wanted to say that these were delivered yesterday and I'm delighted with the quality. The telescopic legs are fixed at the desired length with a little lever like my camera tripod, the rubberised, mostly rigid "U"-shaped swivel head is really well-designed. The rubber tips on the end of the legs can be retracted thanks to a screw-fitting to relveal metal spikes for soft ground, and the central section of the legs have numbered graduations on them to enable quick adjustment to the correct length for standing, sitting and kneeling positions. Overall, really good build quality, design and price. I now actually need to use them of course to complete the review, but for that I require a rifle. Fingers crossed, it should arrive this week.

Pine marten
Don't forget to post a picture of the rifle !

Oh don't worry. Forthcoming chapters of Tales of the Pine Marten are:
1. "In which the Pine Marten's rifle arrives"
2. "In which the Pine Marten tries out lots of different factory rounds"
3. "In which the Pine Marten shoots his first deer at Sikamalc's"
4. "In which the Pine Marten takes a deer carcass home on the train and butchers it in his shed"
5. "In which Mrs Pine Marten is surprisingly delighted and asks him to go stalking some more".

Some of those chapters are more likely to actually happen than others.

And not forgetting 1b In which the Pine Marten successfully mounts scope using only the finest and sleekest ring/mount setup on the planet:

I bought the rifle as a combo deal with a scope and mounts. I'm sure I could put it all together myself decently enough, especially if I enlist the help of the numerous denizens of the BSRC, but when I speak to the SGC on the phone, I may suggest that it would be very helpful if they could do that bit. We shall see.

What's that mounting system? It does look the business.

The pic is of a heavily customised mount with http://conetrol.com/ rings.

I won't use any other mounting system on a sporting rifle.

Cheers

Ps: I can't see "SGC" getting the eye relief correct but then they may simply leave the rings slack for you to tighten.

The Sportsman's Gun Centre includes Leupold or Warne mounts in the deal, which aren't the slickest, but I assume they're serviceable enough. I'll see how I get on with them and one day, I'll probably upgrade them. This is my first rifle, to I have years and years of expensive tinkering to look forward to with ever-diminishing returns.
