Dear members of this great and knowledgable forum.

How do I get rid of bindweed ? It comes into my property under a fence from a hawthorn hedge that I border onto and wraps itself around all my fruit trees and bushes.

ive tried weedkiller from a garden centre but I'm thinking that I need to clamber over the fence and have a go at it the other side.

what is the best thing to use without killing the hawthorn ?

Glyphosate, use a commercial strength one such as Roundup Biactive, the retail stuff is already too diluted to be of much use. Bindweed roots can be spread as far as 15' underground so ideally your neighbour should be treating theirs as well. It can take multiple applications of regrowths to kill.

Don't worry if you see no effect for a week, ten days. it does work just take a while to start killing it off.

Best to do when the Hawthorn is inactive in the winter as it is highly susceptible to Glyphosate. The tiniest bit of wind drift when spraying could really cause some mischief. If you need to do it now you could use a paintbrush to coat the leaves of the bindweed or even better break the stems and use a brush on the broken plant.

This is what our gardener does.

Heard on gardeners question time an old method not recommended now of course was to put a large rubber glove on with a smaller woolen glove over that soak your double gloved hand in neat weedkiller and then wrap your hand round each weed stroking from base to tip. They thought it sounded over kill

Roundup will kill everything.
If you can get hold of some (cough) then Grazon Pro is better. I use it on my smallholding. Supposed to be for commercial/agri use only.
Kills many weeds but will leave your grass alone. As has been said be very careful when you are spraying it

I think Grazon will still kill Hawthorn? It works on broadleaved plants but not grasses. If you do spray or wipe, leave the dead weed until it is brown and dry - so that as much weedkiller as possible gets to the roots.
Otherwise, regularly pulling up or out as much as you can is pretty much all you can do. This can be quite effective if you're able to do it often and have a grudge against it.

Agree with all above, absolute pain. If you can early in season you can unravel long stem of it put it inside a container and spray it so get good does on leaves and will be translocated to roots. I fear it will take multiple treatments but you should win.
