Blaser 6.5 Creedmoor Twist Rate

Evening all,

I’m led to believe that the twist rate Blaser use in their 6.5 creedmoor barrels is 1:8.66” or 1:220mm. This seems a tad on the slow side with the standard being 1:8” according to Hornady.

Has anyone encountered stability issues with heavy/long bullets?

Thanks in advance

Hi thought it was 1in 8 but I might be wrong. What weights are you thinking about? Putting 123grn SST & 120grn ttsx through my R8 creedmoor more than happy, not after a 1000yrd set up

I think you’re right - my 6.5 PRC is 1:8.666. Stabilises 147gr ELDM very well indeed.

I'm no expert but when you find a load your happy with stick with it👍.Then stock up on the components good luck.

Probably using the same barrels they had for 6.5x55.

Can’t comment on the twist rate but everything I have fired through my r8 CM from 120-156gr has been absolutely spot on with factory loads certainly better than I can shoot and it’s never thrown out anything to make me concerned up to 400 yards.

Jax you are correct 1:8.7 I have just asked two blaser dealers including the one I bought mine from who both said 1in8 I found lots of barrel adverts with a google search saying 1in8. I have just spoken to Blaser UK who told me 1in 8.7. All the mis information is lack of attention to detail and just assuming that the caliber follows the Hornady standard !!!
Does any other manufacturer produce 6.5CM in anything apart from 1:8 ?

Am I just cynical or is it a case of saving money and using existing production blanks or machinery. I mean its understandable as they would have little room to manoeuvre with their RRP's so they would have to charge more.

I'll add confirmation to 1:8.7, I know because I've measured it. I foolishly thought 1:8 that I'd read on line. Cynical, no you're spot on. Good luck trying to group anything around 130 grains in Copper.

A friend uses 127 LRX in his with no issues and he shoots lots.

I’m currently using Federal 95gn Vmax through mine and accuracy and consistency is excellent at close and longer ranges.

You say that, but my Mauser 6.5x55 barrel is 1:8.7 and it’s grouping like this at 100m using Fox Classic Hunter 123 grain (non lead).

I did waste lots of money, time, powder and bullets trying to get Barnes 120TSX to group.

Sako 120grn non toxic factory group well in my creedmoor Blaser, would like to try the Hornady 120grn CX non toxic factory but unable to get hold of any locally yet. Whatever calibre you go for will need to find that your rifle likes 👍 good luck

I wouldn't be the slightest bit concerned with a 1:8.66 twist in your Creedmoor barrel. It's pretty hard to imagine any 6.5 mm bullet currently on the market that wouldn't stabilize with that twist. Here is the JBM Ballistics calculator:

JBM - Calculations - Stability

The critical factor in bullet stability is bullet length. Here is the JBM Ballistics bullet length list that covers most of the currently-available bullets:
