Blaser or Sako?

I always liked the sako. I have Got 2 r93s in synthetic and attache grade 7 wood. One leftover new stock and one s hand. Both a fraction (between 1/3 & 1/2) of what a new r8 goes for. For new r 8 money I started looking at custom route, as they r too much for a factor rifle at that cost. however The main thing for me is take down and repeatedly, plus r93 r a bit lighter than r8 which was a bonus.

I haven't got time to read all the other posts so I may be duplicating.
I would go for the Blaser in .308 and if later you wish to use a .243 you can buy another barrel or any barrel of your choice.
Also Blaser, by being modular, is easier to carry if travelling abroad.

Interesting to see how many people comment that have owned both Sako’s and Blaser and have stuck with a Blaser - testament to the build quality and design of them. I don’t own A Blaser but I have shot with one on a number of occasions (R8 pro success) and they are beautiful functioning and engineered rifles…

I do however own a Sako…..and, erm…meh….if you wanted to buy it I’d be happy to sell it. It does ok but it is rough on bolt cycle, and I would never call it beautifully engineered.

If I had to pick holes in the Blaser - the safety is an arse of a design, and I don’t like a straight pull….but the German engineering is fantastic…that brings you to the best of both worlds….buy a Sauer or S&L…

I think the key point of the blaser is being overlooked and that is the switch barrel.
Once you have a rifle you can get additional barrels in the bolt face family for not a lot of money, certainly less than the cost of another sako, and you have a very consistent experience.

As to comments on the trigger, the blaser trigger on either r93 or r8 has never been something that I have really been aware of or thought about. Every sako I have had (four), I have adjusted.

To be honest - im not sure the cost of a barrel is going to be less than a Sako. By the time you add the mount/saddle etc which you will need if you want true switch barrel…it would be close.

Although I’d still take that options over the Sako.

The price of the barrels is really exorbitant meanwhile. The last I bought for an R93 in 2010 was EUR 599.-. If you want one for the R8 now it‘s going to cost you around EUR 1,500.-!!!! These are prices for STANDARD barrels, not semi-weight or match. But hey, what else am I gonna splash out my money for …

The mounts have actually been reduced in price to EUR 289.-. And you can reuse them again and again on any Blaser rifle. A bargain if you ask me.

I have a Blaser R8 Pro in 243 3006 6.5 creedmoor bought s/h stock & GRS Bifrost stock swapped metal work over into Bifrost. Here are my thoughts if I was to just have the one make/ rifle think blaser over expensive mounts sling screwdriver etc etc, but having had one do like the it. But would go sako stainless in 6.5 cal Macmillian stock. Put picattiny rail on it get decent q r mounts for day & nv scopes job done. But other folks may have own ideas. Good luck

For those that are interested and find them self in a similar quandary I went for the Blaser, unfortunately I’ve yet to receive it but I’m hoping it won’t be much longer now, I’ll post up my thoughts when I get a few rounds under my belt.

Love or hate the Blaser!! like most rifles it works just fine for me. Might just get a sako just to say have had one. At the end of day one life live it. Enjoy Yr new rifle

I have a Sako 85 and love it. I agree with some posts above in that it isn’t the most modern or sophisticated, but it does the job over and over again. For me the safety is straightforward, obvious and easy. The trigger is lovely. I’ve had issues with cartridge case ejection angle but nothing to worry about. I sorted out low mounting an S&B scope with excellent Tier 1 rings and got the right fit for me. It is, when all is said and done, surely all about fit. I have looked at a Blaser, but they do seem an awful lot of money. Try before you buy. And the new Sako 100 might very possibly be exactly what you’re looking for with the best of both worlds? Certainly an interesting proposition - build quality will need to be good though. Just my opinion.

I have been a big fan of Sako and tikka for years , last year I sold my sako and purchased a Blaser it’s a very nice gun but not any more accurate than the Sako it replaced But I won’t be going back to sako any time soon

Personally I’d your thinking of a blaser I’d say yo can afford to get a rifle built for you. I think that’s what I’d do in any case it will shoot better than most factory builds and be specific to you!

My mate has the 404 also and rates it very highly. I love the stock on it. Very comfortable, and I'd say he rates it over the Blaser too.

I had same thoughts before buying my rifle, buy something that would do the job, or a nice sako or blaser. I looked at a lot of rifles, quickly decided I wanted a thumb hole stock. I didn’t like the feel of the S20 and always kept going back to Blaser.
I like the straight pull, if I wanted a bolt would probably have got a 404.
Then spent time considering the ultimate or pro success. In the end I bought a pro success in 308, the grip is slightly different shape than the ultimate and just fits my hand better. (Was also as bit cheaper)
Am very happy with it, just a shame all the bits are so expensive.

I looked at s20 hunter as second rifle no comparison quality wise to my R8 but at about half the price it's an option

You might get a poverty spec Blaser for twice the price of an R8…
They are waaay more than double now.
Not a fan of the S20 and the new 100 is going to have to be exceptional to get past the abortion of a mount system

The 85 in carbon can be had for the price of a bog standard R8
The Raven Carbon with an R8 in it is something special though and significantly cheaper than the factory Carbon option

The brands are not in the same price bracket on like for like products

I would have a look at a Heym or Shultz & Larsen of you are looking for a traditional solidly made rifle that will last for years. Blasers are good rifles but definitely have a price premium attached.
