Blaser or Sako?

I myself was in the very same situation you find yourself in was shooting a sako 85 finnlite in 25-06 with absolutely no complaints, also owned a full custom 22-250AI and a semi custom sako l61-r in 7x57 had everything in the uk covered
but had an itch that had to be scratched and entered the eye wateringly expensive world of blaser  tried/handled r8 pro success standard and leather tried the r8 ultimate as well didn't shoot it but just didn't like the fit I'm sure you I would of got used to it but liked the feel of the pro success better out of the box just fantastic thumbhole fitted like a glove didn't bother with the leather spent the money on the atzl trigger (well worth the extra) went for .243 and 6.5x284 when it comes to the extras
mounts, bipods, slings, cases, extra barrels (fluted) take a deep breath smile and cry once :) haven't even got to use new rifle much yet due to lockdown but the little I have used it absolutely love it

regards b.b
That's the only thing I regret not getting altz trigger,I spent the extra wonga on match flutted barrel on my 6xc which shoots unbelievable. I get what people say about things like the mount being expensive but your paying for something that must be fairly precise the way they clip off and return to zero every time. I had everything I've got on and off and re shot all through same hole on the target

When you've shot rifles with jewel triggers for years there average. My only other criticism is forend that should have been modular for either the std sporting or option of a beefed up flat bottom one. In the scheme of things I can live with these issues the plus points outweigh the minus I won't be changing mine 👍

I agree. Every time I try a r93 because I have persuaded myself to buy one the trigger comes nowhere near the Jewell on my R700.

Speaking purely personally, for me Sako perfectly hits the 'sweet spot' between highly functional but nothing amazing to hold rifles like Tikka, Bergara, CZ, etc., and overly posh brands like (especially) Blaser.

I want a rifle that works, is accurate, feels nice in my hands, but I'm not afraid to scratch or get dirty either. My Sakos fulfill all those criteria, but I'd never be relaxed using a Blaser: I'd be terrified of getting a mark on it.

I prefer Sako 75s, but if they were impossible to find I'd quite happily go for 85s instead (not really convinced by the S20 though!).

Each to their own.

I looked at s20 hunter as second rifle no comparison quality wise to my R8 but at about half the price it's an option

Massive thanks to everyone that has replied, quite a few valid points made for sure.
I handled both the carbon wolf, R8 and K95 at the shooting show last year the K95 was lovely but it’s not really what I’m looking for.
the only things I wasn’t over struck with on the R8 other than the price tag of course was the trigger (little heavy for my liking) but I’m sure the altz trigger would sort that out, the other things was magazine / trigger unit being a composite plastic material but I’m sure I can live with that.
The Sako stock was fantastic and I know where I am with it but it an itch I think I’d like to scratch, biggest thing is I could probably completely kit out the Sako for the price of the bare blaser.......... decisions decisions 🤔

I’d certainly try the pull on the ATZL before you spend the extra - it’s fantastic but very light. Wouldn’t want to be anywhere near it with cold fingers and a live animal!

I have shot them all extensively other than the BSA mentioned above. Many benefits to many rifles but as a PACKAGE, the choices are seriously narrowed down. Yet you really have to state a price to get a true start point. People mostly recommend their own rifle anyway. It's hard to amass a broad comparison, if only you could drive around like cars and test drive them all. Even at gun shows you can beiefly test drive isuzu, ford, nissan etc.

I don't personally like the engineering solutions to non existent problems that the R8 exhibits BUT when I handled one at the range I noted:-

  • The grip was very comfy

  • The trigger was very very good indeed

These are the 2 things on which the majority of my accuracy is based. Add their popularity and the way they seem to hold their value and I'd probably be looking at the R8.

Just looked and im sure its nice, BUT, atzl trigger is another £600 + plus on top of an already expensive rifle. Gotta draw the line somewhere, surely??? Lol

was in the same boat 5 years ago ,brought the r8 pro success in 308 ,never looked back .bloody great rifle .

Fingers crossed for scone palace this year and I can possibly get a good look over an R8 again. £600 for a trigger is somewhat excessive!!! Certainly more than the £20 spring in my Sako 🤣

I own an R8 and love it its I was apprehensive the day I picked it up bit after a few rounds amd a bit of meat in the freezer I agree with my pal who said you wont regret it I certainly don't the standard trigger is awesome.amd I can't see why anyone would want to change it

I have a Carbon Wolf in 6.5 and mate I stalk with has 2 blazers, R8 success in syn and leather. He also has a Sauer be 202 carbon and I’ve shot them all. Nothing to do with the cost as I would not swap the Sako for any of them. 20” with a LP mod which is perfectly balanced.

Got both Sako s20 hunter in 243 and Blaser R8 in 6.5 x 55 both extremely accurate providing i do my bit of course and wouldnt be without either.
Treat ya self get both after all its a milestone b-day😉

I've a few Sako's, still have 2 namely a finnfire (best .22 ever) and a TRG but I chopped my Sako 75 for an R93 and then upped to the R8.
It's an ergonomic gun with a lot of flexibility and arguably one of the best safety cocking mechanisms out there.
