Blaser R8/Spartan Adapter Suggestions

I have a Blaser R8 with a wooden stock and considering buying a Spartan bipod. Looking for advice on which adapter I can use to avoid drilling the stock for either the Spartan gunsmith adapter or the Spartan rifle adapter? Any suggestions from anyone with a similar setup would be much appreciated.

Drill and screw in a standard qd swivel and get the javlin mount that goes on it?

Other option is to get the sauer 404 bipod mount from javlin, that should fit it

I'm not familiar with the Sauer mount but I think you're going to struggle to mount a Spartan bipod without some drilling of the stock due to how they mount.

Personally I think the sleekest and least obtrusive would be to get a gunsmith adapter fitted, maybe get a pack of the magnetic covers in case you decide to sell and the next owner doesn't want a Spartan bipod.

I have a Salamander "tactical" fitting in the SUS housing of my Sauer 404 for a spartan bipod. I didn't want a hole drilled in the wooden stock ( for the gunsmith adapter) and I was advised not to try drilling a hole in the synthetic stock as the outer rubber may tear. its a neat finish .....but you lose the SUS housing. Mine was fitted by a well known gunsmith so i cant testify how easy it was to fit, but the cost was minimal.

You just plug it in the hole and tighten the bolt.

I've used the sauer official bipod for a 404 and it wasn't worth the 600 quid, also got to think how many times you use a bipod!

The salamander adapter was £100, incl gunsmith fitting ( if its just a bolt tighten, I guess that's why there was negligible fee for fitting). How on earth Sauer can charge £600 !!

My advice would be to choose a better bipod……😉 not as trendy but Harris or Atlas are much better.
There may be a reason why the USMarines new rifle doesn’t have a Spartan bipod 😁
If you look at the picture of the R8 and the location of the sling stud a Harris wouldn't work either.

Military like other public sector departments like to buy what they've always bought regardless of what better stuff is on the market. The Spartan would be unnecessary and a huge cost to the Marines. They lose kit all the time so a quick release bipod would get lost by a bunch of people who didn't pay for it!

However plenty of SF units around the world are using Spartan bipods and kit because of the nature of their deployments.

Thank you for all of the replies and the suggestion of the Salamander, which looks like it could work.

I’ve seen both of the following photos on the Salamander website but the carving within the stock is different to mine - no clearer on how it would actually screw in. Has anyone fitted one themselves?

From the pictures I assume you'd have to drill through the existing sling stud hole all the way through to the gap in the stock. Then the threaded bar would go all the way through and the square nut would sit in the recess (a bit like a recoil lug) and the bar would screw into that until tight.

Stock would look the same from the outside but not sure if the hole would have to be enlarged from the existing sling stud and therefor couldn't just be swapped back without a little extra work.

I agree that the tactical bipod that attach to a spigot, Pic rail or M lock do look much better than the wibbly wobbly ones that attach to the post.

Yes those do well too for more heavy duty use but the magnetic attachment is still very popular and useful for those units who need to hike in and take standing shots etc where ultra lightweight is important. Also where kit needs to be shared around, such as tripods etc it makes sense especially when QR functions are necessary.

Thing is a javlin bipod is a get by, its never meant to be as ridged as a harris or atlas nor used on the same platform

It's just designed to get you a little more stable in the odd time you need to go prone for which they excel

Just get the Gunsmith adapter fitted properly and crack on shooting with or without a bipod. When the bipod isn't fitted and the magnetic cap is in place you don't really notice it's there.
I've got two R8 stocks fitted with them, although they're synthetic, they work great. I got a gunsmith to
fit them for me in such a position and just about flush so that I also have the option to fit a Harris to the sling stud for when I need to develop a load.

I looked at the Salamander mounting option for my new timber Success and decided to keep my timber stock unaltered and shoot off my quad sticks or backpack.
The mount through the swivel is ugly, I'd have the cup fitted if I was to alter anything. The universal mount will tear up your support hand with anything that has recoil, sling swivels are bad enough.
