I’m an old-fashioned dinosaur, who has a blatant, hate, and disregard of blaser

Especially when a month ago, I had somebody stalking into a CWD. I was 15 yards away in the hedge and all I could hear was click – reload – click – reload – click– reload- bang dead cwd!

I was actually bloody surprised that the deer stood there long enough to get shot.

Sorry, but whatever ever, I have fed a sako/tikka/Ruger have all shot 1” or better with very little effort.

You want to spend £3K on a rifle crack on doing what you do.

BUT there are far cheaper, better alternatives out there!

I have an R8 Ultimate 65CM Match barrel.

I have mixed feelings about it at the mo'.

I like:

- it is compact
- adjustable cheek is one of the best designs I have come across
- option to switch stock module is nice, I have the adj which works well. I am into ergonomics
- match barrel is fluted and its not particularly heavy
- trigger is nice without going to the upgrade.
- it shoots 7mm at 100m so nowt wrong with accuracy
- not had any rust problems unlike previous rifles
- the mount system; nice to take the scope off and have the same poi when it goes back on
- straight pull is easier to stay on target for me.
- drop out trigger is not the problem I feared

I dislike (with some enthusiasm):

- the forend; it flexes and can be hard against the barrel with some bipod settings. That is unacceptable in a rifle at this price bracket. It is a known issue and there are aftermarket solutions but really?!
- everything is £££.
- their rings? I think I can shift zero in some positions when managing recoil on the front ring. Not sure. Probably better with the pic rail and third party rings.

IMO at this price point there should be no dislikes which reflect design failures.

This pretty much sums up my feelings as well. They’re amazing bits of kit in every regard and I marvel at the engineering of them almost every-time I use it but holy mother do I hate the “Blaser Tax” that one needs to pay to play. Unfortunately for this Scotsman it is worth the grinding and gnashing of teeth to buy.

I have noticed rust spots but as others have mentioned it was entirely down to my lack of maintenance and no different to other rifles in my cabinet.

I have one and tbh wouldn’t get rid of it for anything. It’s super handy being modular but it does rust. A wet day which is the norm here and blood even with a wipe still rusts as do their shotguns albeit not as badly.

30 years ago I always said I'd never buy a Blaser, they were too expensive and too nice in wooden stocks for UK stalking. Now I own several non wood R8's, my main reason to opt for an R8 is travel, the ability to travel with a smaller compact rifle case with several barrels if needed.

The only bad thing is the cost and the fact that it is like a disease, you will have to spend more to get more parts and accessories! As someone said above, invest now because prices keep rising.

I'm impressed by the R8 overall, handles well, short action length, accurate, nice trigger and a practical finish. I have quite a few barrels and lot's of scope mounts, I strongly suggest you look at some cheaper scope mounts out of Eastern Europe, very good quality but much less cost. I shoot from .243 up to .375 H&H with my R8, six barrels in total. I just purchased another for my son's 21st birthday, we are off to Africa with our R8's next month.

You can certainly buy several stand alone good rifles for what an R8 costs, it's a lifestyle choice, if you enjoy the sport and can afford it, go for it. They hold good resale values. You need to consider extra barrels, mag adapters, different bolt heads between cartridge groups (mini, standard & magnum) and scope mount options. I ended up with at least one scope mount per barrel and extra mounts for red dot and thermal sights.

This pic shows a two Pelican 1700 cases each holding an R8 with 2 scoped barrels, in this case .300 Win Mag and .375 H&H Mag, total external case length is 38". Nice and easy for travel.

I picked up a double case and two barrels 2 trigger units 1 stock and mods and scopes all fit together in nicely with a key and pull through and cloth your all set ammo separate
My favourite for general stalking 222 and 308 covers everything when away

I dislike (with some enthusiasm):

- the forend; it flexes and can be hard against the barrel with some bipod settings.

I'm afraid ALL of the Blaser synthetic stocks are totally inadequate when opened for the match barrel. But then, they can flex even with a standard profile barrel.

The carbon stock should be ok, the Raven Euro carbon stock certainly doesn't flex, neither will the GRS laminate.

After suffering envy at my neighbour’s R93 and R8, I bought an R93 in .223 with a 6.5x55 barrel. I’ve found it to be very accurate and exceptionally easy to clean/dry.

The simplicity of regular cleaning is probably the most attractive aspect, to me.
I’m a big fan of being able to take it apart, it makes cleaning far easier. After a day out in the rain, I just take it apart, dry it on the kitchen table, oil the bits that need it, and put it back together. Ready for the following day.

If I could go back, I would buy one sooner than I did.

Only thing that I would say let's em down is the flex in the forend it should be solid or needs bedding. It still amazes me the repeatability of the mounts for what they are

Do you have a bipod on the forend ??

I’ve never found any flex, but have never had a bipod as I shoot 90% off sticks or from a high seat

Me again, sorry for all the questions but there is a member on here that has a Blaser for sale that im potentially interested in but the seller has informed me that I need A slot on my ticket for the bolt, barrel, action and moderator as all pressure parts and all have their own serial numbers. This can’t be right surely?

I’ve got a slot on my ticket for exactly that as you said with all parts mentioned purely due to the need for a replacement trigger unit, mod stock etc
Speak to you FEO and state that it’s a full rifle
My 22 LR and 22 WMR are just barrel, mag bolt mod head and ammo as I use the stock and metal work off one of my other full built rifles

Criteria is a full rifle on your cert, as long as you don’t exceed that, BUT check first with your police / FEO for clarity - ask that you have found a whole modular rifle for sale with different part numbers - on mine that are stated as such on these on 2 calibres

Don’t take a chance on hearsay get it confirmed either way to be sure, you don’t want a serial number for a gun part not on your ticket under any circumstances

Yes I use bipod, I got tier one evo with the rail extension out the front which caused the flex decent bipod but could get enough height with it am back to harris with no issues. Getting back to the above question I've only got barrel serial number for xc that's how it came from big blaser dealer ,but when I bought 7mag private had to get bolt head put on as well because seller had both on his ticket

I own 2 r8’s 6.5creed and 30.06 both very accurate, I love how short they are for woodland stalking, both have shot well over 500 deer each. I only clean every 20-30 rounds, never had an issue with either. Yes there’s cheaper rifles out there as we all know, most of which are good. But imo the blaser takes some beating.

We have used blaser rifles all our life with clients and ourself as hunters and couldnt speak a bad word about them.
