Thanks. Two things put me off - the reputation that Meindl have at the moment for immediate leaking and failure, and I want a boot that I can use for hillwalking too if at all possible.
I use Meindl Dovre for hillwalking. And I know they advertise them as being built on a broad fit last, but I haven’t noticed them being any broader than any other boot. I would have said they were narrower than the Le Chameau ones I had before. True, my perception may have been subjectively coloured by the comparison between an old well run in Le Chameau boot and the new Meindl pair.
I have come to the conclusion regarding the reputation of different boots. I think it is skewed. For two reasons.
People have had bad experiences with all makes, they always say they are worse than the models before. Never do they say they are improved.
No account seems to be taken for the fact that there is an element of hand work involved and most importantly a natural material used. However consistent the tanning process each hide comes from a different animal with different life and feeding and etc. Some hides will always be more resilient than others. So some boots will fail earlier than others of the same make and model.
I currently have two pairs of the Meindl Dovre boots and wear them alternately. I am beating 30 of days a year, occasional hill walking and stalking probably doubles that. They are 5 and 6 years old I think. My most comfy Le Chameau, which also acquired a poor reputation on here, lasted 7 seasons before the goretex failed and another one and a half with sealskin socks.
If you can’t get to Yorkshire to get a bespoke boot from Altberg then any good boot with one of the bunion stretching tools seems favourite. The tools will work on other leather shoes you have so would seem a sound investment.
