Boots for Bunions

Have a look at the 'Wide Fit Shoes' site, I've bought trainers from them, think they do boots.
They provide a measuring chart and info on size measurement.
Due to my bunion and an insert I have to put in any footwear, I buy a larger size and experiment with shoe liners to get a snug fit.
Good luck, an exhausting process.

Might be a trek but Altberg do custom fitting at their factory in North Yorkshire. They will even make a custom made last for your feet which can be used in the future when the boots need replacing.
Aye, it's a bit too far from NE Scotland unless I get really desperate (not there quite yet). Thanks for the info.

Meindl Dovre extreme boots are wide fitting naturally
Thanks. Two things put me off - the reputation that Meindl have at the moment for immediate leaking and failure, and I want a boot that I can use for hillwalking too if at all possible.

I use Meindl Dovre for hillwalking. And I know they advertise them as being built on a broad fit last, but I haven’t noticed them being any broader than any other boot. I would have said they were narrower than the Le Chameau ones I had before. True, my perception may have been subjectively coloured by the comparison between an old well run in Le Chameau boot and the new Meindl pair.

I have come to the conclusion regarding the reputation of different boots. I think it is skewed. For two reasons.

People have had bad experiences with all makes, they always say they are worse than the models before. Never do they say they are improved.

No account seems to be taken for the fact that there is an element of hand work involved and most importantly a natural material used. However consistent the tanning process each hide comes from a different animal with different life and feeding and etc. Some hides will always be more resilient than others. So some boots will fail earlier than others of the same make and model.

I currently have two pairs of the Meindl Dovre boots and wear them alternately. I am beating 30 of days a year, occasional hill walking and stalking probably doubles that. They are 5 and 6 years old I think. My most comfy Le Chameau, which also acquired a poor reputation on here, lasted 7 seasons before the goretex failed and another one and a half with sealskin socks.

If you can’t get to Yorkshire to get a bespoke boot from Altberg then any good boot with one of the bunion stretching tools seems favourite. The tools will work on other leather shoes you have so would seem a sound investment.

I have broad feet and have just changed from Meindl Douvre Extreme to Brandecosse Cervis Rossi and the new ones feel wider than the Meindls. And they are lovely boots too

Might try a pair of Lowa Zephyrs (or something similar). I have narrow heels and with fairly wide feet around the ball of the foot. The Lowas, with some superfeet (orange) inserts, have worked well for me. Most boots are too wide in the heel for me, and when not, tend to break down (either the heel cup breaks down, or the lining in the heel cup wears through from the loose heel movement) long before the boot itself wears out. With the Lowas (and inserts) I haven't had that problem.

Lowas are pricey here in the States, but they are the only ones I found to really fit me well. May be worth a try for you...

Salomons are a close second (at almost half the cost), but not anywhere near as comfortable.
