Bravecto alternatives, feeling ripped off!

I've just phoned to order some bravecto tablets for the dogs, they've been picking ticks up now the weather's warming. I already know they're not cheap, there's not much change from £50 per dog but I'd already prepped myself for that.
I'd had them on the scales and had their weights ready but was surprised to hear that due to new legislation I'd have to bring each dog in for a health check/consultation.....and that's £40 per dog!! I've got the distinct feeling that I'm being royally stuffed here. Topic for another thread but are vets getting carried away when it comes to ripping us off?
So back to the original question; are there any alternatives and what are others doing with their dogs?
Thanks in advance.

Had exactly this last year when my years supply ran out. Then to add insult to injury I was told I’d have to wait 2 weeks for an appointment - I told them to fro & went to another vet who is still more attuned to animal welfare & operates from a converted residential bungalow & not a big shiny purpose built consultancy/office/moneypit!

vets cant bend or break the law any more than we can. you could try getting animal drugs unregulated, no clue how to go about them off presciption but good luck

Seresto collars have been great for our three (sprocker and two GWPs) with no issues over 7 years now. Get them from Pets at Home. Lasts all season (one per year each) and can take them off (hopefully reducing the amount of insecticide in the environment?) for swimming / working. Have found them more effective than drops and tablets which we did prior to the collars.

Go to the vets and ask for a years prescription of Simparica Trio - supposed to be more specialised for a working dog.

£120 for 12 tablets for a big dog - cheaper for smaller ones.

A clip the spaniels rite short from about the end of this month that way can easily see the lil bastards pick them of with tick comb
Clip them every 6 weeks in summer keeps the cool & clean
Other breeds be more difficult whv teckels

VETS have been told by their governing bodies to do this ... cant remember name of the body in question... but our vet put out a statement last year about this ... and yes each individual animal now requires a consultation of its own over and above cost of medication and every time you want it prescribed
folk with multiple dogs, unless your absolutely stinking of fivers thats not gonna work..

Re. The consult before prescribing: that’s now law, and they must do it or get struck off.

Most didn’t want it any more than you do, and it’s caused enormous problems for many.

The law was introduced because so many people were getting prescriptions online without the animal ever being seen by a vet. While things like flea and tick treatments generally can’t go far wrong if you self diagnose, there are plenty of things that can (and did) go badly wrong.

Yes it’s the new law and vets have to comply, however my vets have been really good. If needing a repeat prescription they offer a 5 minute check and consult with one of the vet’s nurses which is free. Can’t really fault that.
