bTB in Muntjac

Nice one, he is heavily infected with it. Ive had a couple of reds, never heard of it in a munty though. I dare say that post along with pictures will help a lot of people out. Well done

Very useful post and high quality photos, nasty looking lesion, thanks.

I've always found these little deer to be healthy, shoot a fair few and have never condemned one. Much more common in Lincolnshire now than they have been, and often in surprising places.

Holly Crap! That's some serious infection. It's not common for TB to get to this stage but this folks, is why we test in cattle and remove them before this happens. Thankfully those look walled off lesions ann given muntjac are relatively solitary, hopefully infection hasn't gone anywhere else.
Can I copy these pics please?

Thanks for sharing, very interesting. Did the vet remove the entire carcass eventually? If not, how was it disposed of?

Yes, of course, please do. If you'd prefer higher resolution images please just PM me your email address.

We inspect every carcass - both before and since - and have never seen another like it. Hopefully we never will!

Was this near reading by any chance? bTB recently diagnosed on some neighbouring ground to mine

About 15-20 miles to the west as the crow flies.

Since this one I've heard of other muntjac being found with bTB elsewhere in Berkshire and also in Oxfordshire. I wouldn't be surprised if it's also not occurring in other areas where there are high proportions of cattle with bTB alongside muntjac.

It's fortunately still rare, but certainly not unknown.

bTB is 10 miles south of Reading as well!

Nice work Willie!
If I ever cull an animal so clearly infected, I won't be cutting it up at all! Bu#ger spreading that much infestation infection around!
I'd just bag it complete, report it as required and get it to the authorities to dispose of. (if they would let me).
