Buffalo with crossbow

I got these photos and a video yesterday via the bush telegraph. A client shot a buffalo poorly with a crossbow. It charged and the PH got in 1 shot with his 375 before the buffalo was on him. He fortunately killed it with his 9mm pistol (looked like a Glock 19). Rifle took a beating! Fortunately no broken bones.

Is a crossbow an effective method of cleanly killing a buffalo? I ask out of ignorance, not to criticise necessarily.

Anyway this is why the most dangerous game I hunt is pheasant. Although one of those dropping on you from a height can also ruin your day, generally it's safer.

I wouldn’t want a scoped .375 as a buffalo stopping rifle, but that CZ looks like it held up well to the beating.

Agreed. I don't think I've ever seen a PH with a scoped rifle for that 'back up shot' on a DG trek....or for that matter in .375 either.

Like others, I'm intrigue to know whether it still holds it's zero lol.

Never been with a PH yet who carried a handgun as well. Odd I think. I agree re cartridge. Min 416 and preferably bigger with iron sights to my mind. And practice. No good waiting for a charge as ph to see if you can still shoot

Makes you think them red skins must have been some tough buggers back in the day hunting Bison with Hand made bows and arrows ? No PH to bail em out

I assume he went crossbow as his preferred spear didn't get through customs, sometimes you just have to ask why!!!

Far more preferable than a cross bow!
Btw tens of 1000`s of Cape buff have been taken with the good old .375 H+H

Yep agree. Usually one good shot and a follow up. Not so great as a stopper unless manage brain. It’s a toss up between handlabilty lighter recoil and second shot opportunity and one shot last gasp that blasts it
