Bugs on the Bumper.

Tons, the front of the van was white, it's now got a yellowish tinge.
greenfly are mental as well, was doing a prune the other day and by the time it was done, my t-shirt was practically crawling with the beggers.

and pidgeons seem to be making a concerted effort to re-decorate the van as well.

Huge issues with aphids this year was discussed on Radio 4. Partners roses and vibrunum absolutely covered with green fly.
Also agree car aerodynamics may result in less fly strikes.
In the 80s riding a motor cycle through rural lanes resulted in helmet visor and jacket covered in a geen sticky coating of splattered green fly.

Is it just me or do there seem to be more flying insects about this year than the previous few years. I know the state of my windscreen may not be a very scientific test but I do seem to be picking up a lot of insects and using a lot more screen wash.

David.
I have a colleague who does systematic monitoring of invertebrates in Scotland.

He confirms it’s the best spring for them in over 15 years (since his data set began). By some margin.

He’s not totally sure why, but the prolonged spell of warm weather and mild winds certainly helps.

Definitely more around, last year was cold and wet so not ideal for insects or swallows.
I remember noticing a significant increase in the warm dry lock down spring of 2020.

Was there not a scientific survey carried out whereby motorists were asked to start journeys with clean front number plates and submit the splatted bug count and mileage to those compiling the info ? They used the number plate due to the regulation size ;)

There do seem to be far more insects about this Spring than I have seen in may years. This hot dry weather must suit them well. I wonder how much the prevalence of Stewardship land is affecting the situation.
