Butler Creek cover broken

...you go out stalking with your mate, steal his, then afterwards, go to the landowner with a bottle of whisky and a blank cheque, then steal your mates stalking as well...:lol::lol: just kidding,,just trying to come up with the 'ultimate' insult.

I switched to a neoprene scope cover from Bushwear, which cost about £15 from memory. It's waterproof, protects the whole scope, very durable and can be removed and shoved in your pocket in a few seconds.

Well, I'm been trying to glue my broken scope cover this evening and thought I had tried every glue on earth with no success - nothing would stick to this plastic.

However, as a last resort I tried Locktite 480 which is designed to bond plastic to metal and it appears to be holding. Now, it has only been in place for a short while and as the gap was quite big I'm going to let it cure until tomorrow before I put any pressure on the joint and so can give some indication of how effective it has been. Early results would indicate that it is at least worth a try. So for everyone who is staggering home from the pub and will see this post, remember that bottle of 480 in the cupboard and then spend the next 2 hours trying to get your fingers unstuck from the handle of the fridge door at least you will know that your efforts will not be entirely in vain.

Locktite 480

LOCKTITE 480 does the job, or at least it appears as strong as any other part of the scope cover as of this morning.

On the down side 480 is quite expensive (about £15 - £20 a bottle) and so it might just be better to buy another brand that isn't going to break but for those people who might have some lying about the workshop then it seems it will do your job.

Sounds expensive £10 for a BC + £20 for glue.

AccuCover has never broken at the hinge. We use the best available materials for both wear characterics and temperature variations. Our CAD designers have also worked for Rolls Royce. It is a British designed and made product.

Hi Nick,

Looks like a good product you have there but can I please ask you to have look here before advertising your products on this site.

Do I need Trade Membership?

many thanks,

Alex

My BC broke before an outing. Given that they were recommended by SGC I had expected them to be fit for purpose but they just seem to be a margin maker; in addition they are hardly silent. The BCs we used on ops were very solid, a proper ABS hinge not a weak plastic - which is fundamental to use, I'm up for a better product.

Blimey!

I have had mine on for nearly 10 years and they are used constantly, so much so the spring has lost its spring and it only opens half way.

....also strikes me they invite user error, rather than have a scope type they rely on some random measurement across the scope body/tube ( see can't even describe it precisely!!!)
I want to type my scope in and get the fit - job done. :thumb::thumb::-P:-P

Agree entirely the current BC appear total crap, my shooting pals have got through no end in the last year or so. I resorted to buying some Bushwackers to put om my Meopta and they seem fine, with the advantage they are yellow and see through.

Prehaps some kind soul should foreward the thread on to the UK importers.

Cyres,

already did contact BC as per your suggestions, no luck,,,seems to me they don't care...obviously not a big part of their revenue, and must be happy to lose marketshare on this product line.

Did they confirm/deny the change of plastic? Is anyone on the site involved in plastics? If we could get an old and a new example side by side would someone be able to give an expert opinion? It seems like something that should be fairly easy to prove. They'd be mad not to address it.

Well there used to be a place in Shropshire called RAPRA (Rubber and Plastics Research Association), not sure if they still excist.

My MK 4 Leupold came with Leupold (?BC) and they been fine for years. I hope I have just not tempted fate.

I agree also we are a captive market and we are fed poor services/kit from the main dealers, who are making a killing.

Cannot believe the current prices of Powder in the current Henry Krank advert.

You could fairly easily identify a radical material change, even by just burning and smelling.
Delrin to some Polyolefine PP/PE or Nylon are easily to identify. What is more difficult to identify is
if they just changed the quality of a similar material or the ammount or type of filler. Even the parameters on the moulding machine can lead to bad strength. One can easily double the output of a moulding machine if one runs ice cold moulds and short injection times. The lid of one BC eye piece cover that I have lying here is made of PE plastic which is at the low end of engineering plastics and seems to be moulded fast judging by the sink marks.
Another problem on that part is that they have left the corner that has the highest loading sharp. As if one wanted to create a weak spot.

Overall I found the alternatives or cheaper copies to be just as flimsy, never had Leupolds.

Had two BC eye covers go in as many months, yet the BC cover I had on before lasted 10 years before conking out. I'm guessing they've changed something, but I ain't going to start sniffing burning plastic to prove it! :)

I have experienced the same problems. Old BC still going strong have bought 3 obj covers since March for new Nightforce total rubbish

probably made under contract in China, a lot of stuff is these days, and by rights it should have country of origin, either on the objects or paperwork.
