Buzzard help

So my lurcher pup found me a buzzard yesterday bless her, she didn’t know what to do with it. It’s a young one that’s fledged this year, it was just on the forest floor waiting to be badger food- freezing cold and couldn’t fly. Anyway I brought it home and stuck it in a cat box to warm it up and see if it would survive the night… Dog hasnt touched it just to be clear.

It’s alive and well this morning but still unable to fly. It’s not eaten either but had some raw chicken to look at.

I am wondering if anyone knows someone local to Ludlow Leominster Knighton who knows much about them? I have tried to call the raptor rescue hotline but they don’t open until 1100 and the place in Newent Gloucester is shut to admissions due to bird flu.

I don’t mind looking after it until it’s better again as I’ve got a nice big dog crate I can put it in but I feel it would be better left to a professional if possible. I’ve also got an Feo visit tomorrow at 9 so would rather not have a protected bird in my workshop when he arrives 🤷🏼‍♂️

Any pointers to who might be able to help me out would be much appreciated

You have the answer "badger food" it's called natural selection and apparently you ain't supposed to tuch protected species unless you have long hair (in pony tail) beard, glasses and some sort of disorder

True enough, I like birds of prey though so 🤷🏼‍♂️ I did check the legislation and you’re quite ok to pick one up to look after it if it’s injured as long as it’s released as soon as it’s ok again.

I found a fledgling owl several years back, did the same as you, then phoned rspca. Young lass turned up and in no uncertain turms told me I should have left it where it was, I told her where I found it was where everyone local walks their dogs an I would not have fancied its chances of survival, however she was adamant so I let her take it back, an never found out if it survived or not.

I rescued an injured buzzard, which made a full recovery but would subsequently have struggled in the wild due to some permanent damage to one eye. You can only legally keep a wild bop for a very limited period (a few weeks I think) for rehab purposes. I tried to find a falconer who'd take it on, but no one would touch it with a bargepole because it wasn't microchipped and registered. Tried to register it with the Wildlife Registration and Licencing dept (Bristol, iirc) but no joy. I kept it (illegally, despite my efforts to legalise it) for several years. In the end I just had to let it go to take its chances. It took 2 days to leave, but it hasn't been back since.

Ask local vets for help, they may work with a local bird rescue- if you want to feed for a few days. Get to local pet shop or raw feed shop and buy a few frozen day old chicks , not expensive- leave it in cage quiet and give a few defrosted chicks daily. They defrost in warm water quick and I buy 250 chicks for £10 near me. Large weaned rats are higher in protein, but cost more too 👍

Update. I’ve managed to get it to the Cuan House Rescue in Much Wenlock. The vet has assessed it and says in all likely hood it has been shot. They are going to X-ray it to check now. It’s fit and healthy though so should make a full recovery.

It had turned up in the woods next to a farm that rears pheasant poults funny enough and the owner is a locally well known arsehole

Thanks for all of the help- I should say case closed 👍🏻👍🏻

really sad that numpties still shot these birds, i found one years ago in a right state after being shot, blind in one eye and broken wing, my son was with me so we tried to help but i was put down by vets.
more fuel for the antis if its confirmed

We had an abundance of buzzards around us a few years ago- to many really for the area, not seen one this year. No pheasant shoots or big poultry places near, does make you think where have they all gone. If anyone shooting on the neighbours farm now I don’t tend to fly my hawk on those days.
