I hope I am not being boorish by posting again, but... I will post more general comments for others.
I second the comments about staying away from the .30-06 and 7x65R, unless you shoot a lot, because these rifles are light, and the recoil can become a little snappy.
I have light weight combination guns in 7x57R and 8x57 JRS which I don't mind a bit. They 7x57R is pretty mild. I have a heavier single shot Browning B78 in .30-06 with a 26 inch barrel, and a Ruger No.1A in .280 Remington with a 22 inch barrel - good weights for each cartridge. Friends hunt with a 24-inch break action 7mm-08 T/C, a K95 in 7x57R, one with a Merkel in .270, another Merkel Stutzen in .270 Win.
Because you have no long receiver, go with a 24 inch barrel, which will be like an 18 or 19-inch bolt action.
My vote goes to the 7x57R or 7x65R, which has so much flexibility for loading. My brother has a Merkel break action in .270 Win, it is very accurate, and with milder PPU and Federal 130-gr, recoil is not bad. You are going to carry a lot, admire a lot, shoot little, dress game a lot.
After you buy five or six boxes of ammunition, to see what our rifle likes and what you like, you will have 100 rounds of brass. Buy 100 more of some good brass, a box of your favorite bullet, and duplicate your best factory load. It's fun.
