Capstan winch vs quad bike

Looking at what kit you have already I would put a good winch on the quad bike then you have every thing you need and portable to .

And get a wireless remote for it and you’re good to go.

Don’t bother with a Warn remote kit though. Expensive, a right faff to install and crapped out on the second use. A £10 one from EBay was easier to fit, has a superior range and hasn’t given any trouble.

Slightly cheaper alternative is a 4wd wheelbarrow. Not as capable as tracks but cheaper, lighter and tracks/track transmission are very expensive if they go wrong (which they do!)
Still need a trailor but smaller so you can fit deer in too (4 reds, 8 fallow plus machine in a p6). Safer than a quad as you just let go if it tips. Less nickable too (touch wood)
Only downside is max speed medium walking pace.

Was going to suggest this along with some pulleys and straps so you can somewhat affect the route (of course you'd have to stop and go change the setup before sled hits the pulley).

If going with capstan I'd try to (temporarily) attach it to the sled and use it "backwards". So you'd be at the sled all the time and able to spot any problems (get the excess rope in sled). With capstan and plenty of trees around I'd only get 100m of rope and make multiple pulls if longer distance.

Having choice of truck, quad and capstan it's that order. And even initially using capstan we've always used the truck once close enough. And that's with several people so there's always few at the sled/carcass (communication with radios).

It alll depends on your ground and pick up access.
If u really always can get within a few hundred meters the winch might not be that bad an option

The above post is a really good idea, possibly adapting ur sledge to mount the winch on front and a rope bucket, so u have good control over the sledge and can see wots going on
Really overcomes most off the negatives about winching.

Dunno if it's possible to change gearing on those winches
Most will be designed for pulling as heavy a load as possible slowly, while u really want a relatively light load quickly

The ones I've seen, just take out the drum and have machinist make you new one (bigger for more speed). Of course other dimensions may limit the size or force you to modify other parts of winch.

Must admit never looked at them that closely but would imagine wouldn't be a big job to someone who knows wot there doing.
Like jihy says above a bigger drum or smaller sprocket etc, relatively simple mechanics.
Might even be able to bodge semi home made extension and bolt on to increase drum dia.
Would imagine someone like Tim on here could adapt something easily
Or even make 1 from scratch, ur just a big standard Honda engine and bolt on ur capstan off a size to suit

Really a few 00 kgs is a tiny wieght compare to wot there designed for

Everything works in theory but when it comes to practicality and in any kind of rough terrain you don't need a lot of rope to drag , I only use 50m for restocks then your keeping an eye on what its going to snag on and its not to far away to adjust . If its clear terrain then of course you will get away with more rope . It is slower but easier on the legs and the back. I bought a Berger &Stroller winch for £650 and doing away with the original pulley set up and fitting it out the same as the PCW it works better, cheaper, and don't leave home without it when I know its mainly reds. Just recently I had a stag about 150m down a steepish banking in clearfell and it was no problem pulling it up 20m at at a time before shifting the winch to another stump , wee bit slower but still fit after it .There useful just the same as a quad.

Just quarter deer in the field and transport in game bags,,what the need for moving whole deer...I don’t think you’ll see many elk hunters dragging entire beasts!!!
