capstan winch

Must admit I thougt it might be easier to use as a donor engine as it already has a clutch.
Fair play to ur mate for thinking that up.

Is it easy to buy gearbox's and the capstan bit for making home made bodged winches like this.
I wouldn't have the 1st clue where to ever look for a gearbox and winch to suit

check the links out i listed there on ebay the shaft is also available, along with the correct linkage. On the top near the gear box I would put an emergency stop button the first one I am doing is slightly bigger than I need and will scale it down but as a trail its going to be fine, I still don't see a need for the clutch as the rope does this for you, I will look for another photo hosting company today to upload pictures for you, atb wayne

It depends on the distances u need to extract, I've seen threads on here asking about 100m plus off rope, its fairly unrealistic to handle/manage working with 100m lengths of rope. It can be done but unless very steep/heavy I'd probably opt to struggle on rather than unroll/roll the rope

For just occasional deer it is a lot of cash to buy a capstan, also even carrying the capstan to where its needed would be a separate journey to motor and back

With block and tackles its simple physics/maths, every time u double the rope up u half the effort to move the weight but have to pull on the rope twice the distance.
So if u had a 100kg deer to move up a 10m steep hill, doubling the rope once it would feel like 50kg but u'd have to pull 20m's of rope (another loop 25kg and 40m).

U can buy cheap lug-all types winches from aldi etal cheap, don't get a lot of rope with them thou.
Ucan buy tirfor copies now that are very good, the 800kg model would be plenty, (must admit never used an 800) but the 1600 is getting heavier again the 30m wire rope can be a pita to deal with, the 3200 are heavy to carry any distance.
But a 1600 would be able to self rescue a stuck 4x4

Simple common sense things like putting deer into a sledge, lifting as much as possible of ground raising block/winch as high as possible
If u needed to use a block and tackle up a steep bit u can also redirect where u pull the rope with a quad on top of the banking, or if ur really struggling walk down the banking with the rope and use the bankings steepness to help u
Even in forestry there now putting cones over tree butts when whinching/skidding them out to try and stop them snagging on things and reducing drag

With the PCW3000/5000 you walk down to the deer dragging the rope, gralloch the deer, tie it to the deer, walk back to the vehicle and winch away, the hardest job you need to do is just feed the rope into the bag. Job done with no sweat and an intact spine!

+1
Braided rope will be lighter for strength than twisted strand rope, will not stretch as much, and will not cause as much damage if it breaks, if it ever does. The draw rope that overhead cable installers use, would be good, but possibly a lot stronger than is needed.

Looking good fella. I was curious of how drive was transferred from engine to the gearbox but your pics have cleared that up.
Thanks for posting

I prefer to keep it simple ;)
Starte engine, wrap rope around drum, job done.

After watching that pcw3000 video it does looks s cracking bit of kit, Honda 4 stroke engine as well

Agreed! Better start saving! lol

Yup ..l.lim not shooting enough reds to justify plus I just picked up this for playing with kids on farm but it may be old but kept well decent trailer etc.....so I've tried it on bit I can get reds which is steep! And handled ok !.....gonna get a frame fabbed up then I already have winch for front I can use for hauling me out but roller over the top & pick up a carcass and lower into the back .....
I saw my pals Argo kitted like this and works well

Just a toy really but goes well......if I ever am
Icky to get heavy serious into reds then a pcw3000 really looks the dogs dangles

frame all finished now so awaiting the gearbox shaft and powder coating once its done i can build up properly and test it all, after looking again last night at the strimmer engines with clutches I think that using a clutch is pointless and will add complications because you will then have to operate a throttle to overcome the clutch when zou want to pull meaning it will be too hard to operate single handed atb wazne

Yes there will be a pulley fitted to that shaft for the rope, I can carry it ok although this is ideally used with the quad, drive as far as possible then winch from there.
i might have a crack with the little Honda engine next for a small carry winch but this will work perfect for the ground we have, Atb wayne
