Car stereo amplifier help.

Evening all,

Im having a bit of trouble with a new amp (Kenwood X802-5).

Never had this issue before, wired multiple car systems before.

My new amp will power up and play audio while it is on the ignition.

As as soon as I start up the engine, the amp either switches off or goes into protection mode, hard to tell as the power light turns off and that is the indicator for both power & protection mode.

I have been troubleshooting:
  • It has power, 13.02v on ignition, 14.3v when the engine is running. It's operating power range is 11v - 16v (allowable).
  • The scenario is the same with and without speakers connected, so I've ruled out a short from those.
  • Ran a tester remote switch wire from a permanent live at 12.37v.
  • I have connected my 10 year old amp with everything the same as the new amp setup, that works fine after the engine is running.
  • Ran all the tests above with the HU disconnected and all the speakers disconnected, just power/ground/remote connected. Same outcome.
The amp draws 42A, my alternator is capable of twice that.

Do you think this new amp just has a couple of duff internals?

It's very strange as on the ignition it will blast out music.

Just to add, I have been trawlling through reddit and some audio forums, everyone else with this issue seemed to be because of their remote wire. Mine has no issue.

What do you have the remote wire (generally blue wire) linked into?

Have you tried wiring the remote to permanent 12v?

Sure you got a decent ground?

Ground is into the body with the paint sanded back to bare metal.

The remote has been used on the blue and white from the HU, also linked it on the perm live to test it there.

Both ways allow it to work on the ignition, just not when running.
