Carbon Barrels - BSF

Carbon barrel technology has moved along a lot in the last few years - some remain unconvinced, and for dedicated target rifles we agree that a traditional heavy barrel is still a better option.., however for hunting rifles Weatherby use the BSF Carbon barrel which is a shroud under tension to create rigidity, as opposed to a conventional wrap (Carbon Fiber Barrels | USA | BSF Barrels) - lightweight and fast cooling we have found groups remain tight even when the barrel warms up… though it’s stil not a barrel to shoot dozens of consecutive rounds without allowing the barrel to cool.

We’re interested to hear everyone’s thoughts and experiences on carbon barrels?

When you say under tension- is this permanent or required a tightening up over time? Also what risk to the barrel damage is there if the rifle gets dropped? Forgive my ignorance, thanks.

The barrel shroud remains under tension and never requires tightening - if you imagine an elongated dumbbell weight, with a carbon tube compressed slightly between the two ends leaving the centre free. This means the stainless fluted barrel under the tube is free floating within the carbon tube to allow it to cool. As the barrel warms it expands, however the carbon doesn’t do it keeps the barrel very stiff.

We’ve seen these things dropped down mountains and never crack or split - they are ultra durable!
