I have recently bought new catridges for the start of the pheasant season. Black gold game 5's 32 grams they cost me £262 for 1000 anyone know where i can get them cheaper in central scotland? :)

Listen to your old grandad!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats a serious load for the birds youll be shooting young un.... Pure gold 30grms would be a better load!!! An even better load IMO is Hull 3 crown 30grm 5's..

Depends how high the birds are though? I'd throw 36g gram 5's at them if they were coming off rising ground at height. It's only an extra 20% of shot or 8 yards more on your reach. To be fair, 30g at 20 yards up is a bit of a pillow fight hit centre pattern

Fair point if the birds are 40-50yds high. The pure gold 30grms are a very very good load. And are more than capable of taking birds 40 yds up if the shots put in the right place. I started beating 27 years ago and seen good driven guns taking Pheasant out to 40yds with Hull 3 crown 30grms. I cant remember seeing these super fast heavy game loads on the shelf back then.. Ooops sorry there was a load like that!!! Alphamax we used them on hares and decoyed geese..

That's very cheap! Just cartridges want £297 for a thousand fibre wads (£289 plastic) plus £15 delivery.

what a load of poppy cot
I use 1 ounce loads out of my 20g and they seem to cope with the tallest birds this country has to offer
it's not always the cartridge that is not upto the mark

remember last year when you shot next to me in that planting? I was on the fence side can you remeber the pigeon I shot? That was with a gold!! Those birds were not over high mate but fast. You missed a few with those black carts, as soon as you put the golds in the birds fell. I cam still remember someone telling you I told you so and it wasnt me!!.... As for prices £262 is about right for the golds (which recoil the same as the blacks), the blacks are about £290 per 1000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU will struggle to get them cheaper youngling. Hey the birds are good on that shoot but only on 1 drive I saw I would say they are HIGH birds mate, your grandad was a back gun at that drive. Im only trying to steer you in the right direction. But hey ho if you want to shoot black gold and spend more money than you need fire on bud, after all its your dosh!!!!

As his Shoot Captain i will ensure Mark is under them this year as he is an asset to our syndicate.

Wier game is where i buy them from. I have the gold F2's in the house 30grams 6's. Also 28grams 6's. This year is looking promising never seen the birds looking so well and flying strong as quick as this year bring the 15th on!

TBH I was going on the fact of where else I shoot
on my ground a .410 is good enough:D
I hav shot high birds all over
from devon through the welsh valleys upto the hillsides and lochs in scotland
duck ,pheasant ,partridge ,snipe ,geese
you name it except grouse, geeese were a little tough for the 20 so I reverted back to a bigger toy
this last year at a scottish estate called Glen Striven I shot my highest ever pheasant ever and January birds at this estate are as good as any that the world can produce
the little 20 coped just fine;)

the bottom line as with anything is what you are confident with gun /cartridge /
bullet combo its what works for the individual .
you cant but confidence but thats the answer .
I will be sticking with 32 inch DT 10 choked 3/8 and 5/8
average to good birds RC 32 sipe grm 6
good to high birds express europa game 34 grm 5
high to bloody high above plus some 36 grm bombs

That's not a bad toy your getting shut of
BIL has one in a 20 and also a set of 28g barrels for it
he luvs it
good luck with the sale as I'm sure the new owner will be pleased

yeh?, so you can kill a bird with luck at say 50 yards with a weak 28g ounce pattern and yes we've all seen it done so forget the others that keep on going? A better pattern with high birds is more resposible and appropriate, that's not a debatable opinion. Throw what you like at your birds though as that's every gentleman's privelage.

Paul
with no disrespect
I shoot a 20 as it works
I also don't call 1ounce 6's T3 (RC 20 ) a weak pattern
infact they work consistently on 50 yard+ birds, if they did not then I would not use them
if I was to go all gung ho, I might choose somerset game or RC 20 in 32g in 5's
if I was to go over the top, then Rottie tigers would come into play but more of a fashion statement than anything else
it's not about what you can't do but more about what you can do consistenly
I just know you would not want me and my 20 as your back gun:D

at the end of the day we hav to be comfortable with what combo we shoot with
I am comfortable with mine and know where my limitations lye
Hav you ever shot a Glen Striven driven day??
as the average bird is probably 40 yards on a bad day in Jan and the Partridge are out of this world, as killing birds off Low Dearg is what dreams are made of
