C'est L'Afrique - JDWI

I am booked on Virgin for my first trip in Africa in May . Was warned about BA . So will update on my adventures ( up to now no cancellations ) .

Well this isn't getting any better.

We are (for better or worse) now using a company with uses a 'meet and greet', to get you through Jo'Berg with firearms.
We used these guys last time and it did work well, but last time I did not take a rife and so was spared the admin. nightmare.

You don't need to use a company to do this - you can (I have done it) run the gauntlet of tricksters, shysters, scammers, fraudsters and worse, by yourself. Finding (remembering) where the rifles get sent, then finding (remembering) where the SAP office is.😖

You can rest assured, they are at opposite ends of the airport.

We do not have a connecting flight to fret about this time, but experience directs that we spend a few extra dollars and get the heavy lifted done by someone else.

So just a matter of filling out the paperwork...

SAP Forms (all 8 pages)
Authority for the company to act on our behalf
Notarised copies of Passport
Notarised copies of Proof of Export forms (Border Force forms) - which itself requires you to send them copies of your full FAC, Passport, Flights and Letter of invite!
Notarised copies of Proof of Ownership (FAC)
Letter of invite.
And most important of all, the Credit Card payment authorisation form.

PS
It's OK not to use the African Mail Service (actually they recommend not using it) as everyone recognises this does not deliver (intended!)

High quality scans only, no phone photos allowed.

Only it's not is it!

It's protracted, it's expensive, I don't have a scanner, I don't have a printer, Notarising documents is expensive, I don't have a Solicitor (or Notary)...the whole thing is a massive pain in the arse...

Suddenly the option of just using the Camp junk rifle seems very appealing...

This part of every Safari is always the worst.
Always.

And I fcukig hate it.

There.

I've said it.

Just in case you get tempted to sack off BA and fly Lufthansa down to RSA, all I can say is for gawd's sake don't.

The mask mandates were relentlessly enforced, and it took them far too long to drop them. The rest of the experience in economy class wasn't much cop either.

And the moment you get to the camp and get your first "sundowner" and your blood pressure settles back to its normal pre-stroke level.............

You'll have forgotten all the crap that's gone before and you'll be back in your happy place!:D

Africa vacillation.

This week had a rummage through my ammunition for the upcoming trek to Africa.

I had stated to fill out the paperwork (I know!) and had jotted down (or the on-line equivalent of 'jotted down') the .416 as my rifle of choice.
Other than the occasional zeroing session in the UK, it only gets an outing abroad.

However. I notice this week that I only have solid ammunition for it. We are on a 'plains game' trip this time - although Buffalo may be an option, I simple cannot afford to start bowling them over.

The sensible thing is to amend (easier said) the plethora of forms and swap it out for the .375, as I have solids and softs for this rifle - I eventually (I think) manage to do just that.

In keeping with my latest gunsmithing efforts (I think I am pretty much qualified now...) I need to strip and clean the .375 bolt.
This rifle is also a Sako 75 (same as my .243 and .308) and I am convinced that I am now something of an expert, especially as I now have one of those Sako bolt cocking devices thingys.

As always, striping any bolt is a breeze.

FWIW - the Sako bolt cocking thingy does not fit anything on this bolt!

I still manage to tidy up the bolt and its gubbings, just using things I found in my wife's makeup bag...

IMG_1831.jpeg

A couple of minutes swearing and cursing over the reassembly and it's all good.

The Cocker looks distinctly unimpressed at my rather excellent efforts...

Annoyed at my 'ignoring' her, she does what any Cocker does and rolls on her back for a tummy rub.

What's not to love about that?

Hopefully you used grease rather than oil

the firearms in OT joberg always go to the SAPS office which is on the right after customs. its really simple with one form to fill out and sign in front of them.

When vacillation costs you money.

Working on the premise that I was taking the .416, I duly ordered a bore snake (I know, I know - don't hate) for the rifle.

Then I changed my mind to the .375 and so then had to order one in that calibre.

This Safari is already costing me a fortune, and I haven't got off the sofa yet...😖
