CF2 Caliber Question

I’m looking at a CF2 s/n 7R60XX chambered in .308. According to the chart on John Knibbs website, CF2 s/ns beginning in 7R are .30/06 and those beginning in 3R are .308. The barrel is properly marked with BSA markings. If this action was rebarreled from .30/06 to .308, is there a way to tell if it was done at the factory or was it done by previous owner or gunsmith with an original BSA barrel?

Almost certainly factory barrel. It it was a re barrel you would have a non factory profile barrel, which will be blatantly obvious

Unless someone has Franken-Rifled two CF2s of dubious quality into one functional one….

More likely an anomaly in the records
Are the barrels not serialised under the tenon on the CF2?

That’s too dogmatic a statement. A friend had a new barrel on his CF2 which matched the factory profile in all respects (at his insistence). I’ve also had rifles re-barrelled with profiles to match the old barrel.

Edinburgh Rifles, I did not see any serial number anywhere on the barrel.

Figured no one would go to that expense on a cf2 for starters. Not bad rifles, but you’d be mad to go to that extent

Generally perhaps but not if it’s a rifle with lots of fond memories attached (as was the case with my friends). Also getting a barrel profiled wasn’t always anywhere near as expensive as it seems to be today.

The original Williams front and rear iron sights are in place.

Ok, but chambered CF2s have serial numbers starting with 3R and .30/06 chambered CF2s have serial numbers starting with 7R, so this is likely a factory anomaly as Edinburgh Rifles alluded to?

A lot of BSA and Parker Hale were put together outbid parts bins where ‘if it fits’ (headspace wise as well), it’s goes on/together.

Doesn’t make them any worse, just they were assembled rather than ‘built’.

Had several myself, in fact 3 CF2’s and over 10 PH’s - all shot great! Several of them I regret selling, particularly one 6.5x55, a 7x57 and a 30-06

Could it be the original 30-06 barrel, set back to make it a 308?

If I recall correctly, the barrel was marked as a .30/06.

One would be a SA and the other LA.

I've had a couple of CF2's all were the same quality: dreadful triggers, bad stock design, nice actions, better guns out there..
