Chain saw sharpening

i got that fed up of sharpening my stihl chains and the time and effort for my usage, i just binned em and bought new chains, not stihl and they last and cut just as good as stihl ones this advise was of a pro who does it for a living bs

Stihl 2 in 1 every time for me, does the rakers at the same time and so easy to use once you have worked it out.

And if the chain is badly damaged I dress it up with an electric sharpener with a grinding disc back to standard.

As a matter of interest, which chains did you get?

If your using a vise turn the saw up side down you'll still fill with your right hand going the towards the saw , don't be to greedy on the rakers it makes the saw hungry to cut , it's easier to sharpen with the chain adjusted correctly .

I dont have a bench and vice

Tbh I find that with a vice you can get the needed purchase with the individual files. Not tried the guide but I think they are meant to just give you the correct angle, so you might still need some way of holding the saw firm to file off the metal from the teeth.

I just put the bar in a vise, stand on one side and do the alternate teeth which face the correct way for that side, stand on the other side and do the others. Means I hold the file the same way for all teeth.

David.

I bolted a vice to a plank of wood 20 yrs ago just as a temp fix.
Didn't know where to site it in my shed.

20 yes later still like it, u can move it about as u want or screw it to ur bench. Mine is screwed to a trailer floor the now.
Quite handy really for all sorts off things

Any recommendations for a chain saw sharpener or file guide for a ham fisted amateur?

- Just practice, practice and practice. Study a new chain from all angles and copy that.
- clamp the bar into a vice with the chain tension a bit tighter than normal, have good lighting, take your time and use a sharp new file.
- the only gizmo I use is a file holder, that controls the depth of the file, achieving the correct depth can be quite hard. BUT this can obstruct your view so I alternative with/without the file holder.
- Plus a raker guage specific to your chain and a small flat file.
- ignore every other 'quick fix' sharpener or dremel grinders etc.
