Cheap breastbone saw

If you get your hands on a 22-24 inch bushman saw give me a shout. I have more stainless blades than I will ever use. Jim

A few years ago when we were visiting relatives down south I visited a place called Hell, well I thought it was Hell apparently it was called Blue water shopping centre! Anyway I took my life in my hands and went into a shop called Lakeland and they had a cutlery department and in there I found a little knife that is used for cutting tomato's, it is serrated with curved end, and it cuts through Roe sternums no bother at all. I quite liked shopping for a minute or two :-D

My thoughts also.
Nothing to stop your hand going up the blade IF the blade should catch.

You don't really need a bone saw for roe. I've found that you can cut through a roe's breast bone with a knife. When you do the grollach run you knife down the left or right hand side of the breast done.

The ribs and breast bone are connected together with connective tissue that doesn't take to much cutting, I've found it quicker to run my knife down the side of the breast bone than Get a bone saw out to cut through it.

When you start the cut keep you knife close to the bone and job done.

I always carry a sagen bone saw but have never used it for splitting breast bone not even on reds,my trusty buck knife splits them no probs, pull it from the inside outwards but be careful not to stab yourself in the leg.

I was bought a Buck Alpha Crosslock, which has a main blade, and then a saw blade, and gut hook combined. It is awesome, and not had a breastbone yet that this would not tackle. Just pull the blade from inside to out, job done.

Before I had this knife, I did the same as other replies, and cut down the side of the breast bone.

They are not 'fit for purpose' mate. If you look at the teeth, they are very coarse and cut on the push stroke which will push hair, dirt, etc into the carcass. You need a saw that cuts on the pull stroke, and preferably stainless steel.

Hello MS.

I agree with what you are saying. My normal process when I can hang the carcase to bleed, and gralloch is to run the knife blade under the breast bone skin, then peel it back from the centre line a little to expose the bone only, push the stomach back with the non knife hand, then saw down (only pulling the saw blade) clean flesh. I only do this when I can carry out cleanly. If it is a drag, then I wait till I get back to the larder.

I like the look of the Dave Stretton `pull saw`, but it is another blade to carry, so not sure of the benefit.

Your point is well taken though, have to be careful.

All the best.

Neil.

Bought the David Stretton saw and have tried it on a couple of roe and it was superb. As for the extra luggage aspect I just put it in my roe sack, don't really notice the difference.

Bushwear do a cheap bone saw under a tenner works fine in the field and you can carry it on your belt, Gerber do a similar saw but it costs a bit more but still under twenty quid, some have said you don't need a saw for Roe and you don't, but a saw will make a neater job,if its only for your own use it doesn't matter but if going to a Game dealer you want them to be as neat as possibly,my Game dealer insists on the aitch bones being split and while it can be done with a knife you will soon knock hell out of your knife.

Even if you only do a green gralloch and leave the rest till back at the larder you are better with some sort of a saw if you do a lot its worth investing in a proper bone saw about £70 when I last bought one, replacement blades are around £7 but last quite a long time, if you are only doing a few deer a Sandvick or similar type wood saw will do the job, but won't last long.

BDS sell a bone saw circa £15 about 8" blade - brilliant for use in larder otherwise I use a bushwear chest saw on fallow.. Why split a roe breast bone in the field? I take every thing out in the field and then split at the larder to assist cooling. If I want heart liver etc a plastic bag will keep them clean in the chest cavity.
