Cigarette prices to go up

As a former smoker it won't affect me, but when I see the price of the things these days I'm stunned. I honestly don't know how it can be affordable. Anyway, that's none of my business.

Apparently the average cost of a pack these days is £16.78, and it's gone up by almost a pound as of 6pm this evening.

I haven't smoked since 2011 or so, but even then it was getting expensive. When I first started, Regal King Size (the fag of choice for us back then) was £1.33 for 20. Then Lambert and Butler appeared at £1.14 and swept the board. Golden Virginia was 87pence per 1/2oz.

And here's something I've always wanted to say, 'Back in my day, you could buy your tobacco, papers, and a racket of Polo's, and still have change from a pound' 🤣🤣🤣

I recently quit smoking and my last pack of American ciggies was around $13 but well worth the price if compared to your UK cigarettes which I found to be awful and last less than half as long. However, I talked with an Aussie chap once in an outside smoking area and he said that at home cigarettes were 80 dollars (Australian) per pack. Apparently some sort of initiative to force people to quit by attrition.

P.S. I have met so many interesting people in designated smoking areas that I think the social aspect is what I will miss the most.

They have prices a bit higher than the UK, about $42 AUS ($27 US) for a pack of 20.

When i packed in marlboro red (my chosen pack) was getting to be £4.99 in some places. I said I'd never pay a fiver for a pack of 20. Mental.

I used to like Marlboro Red. Had far too many in Gambia one time as they were about a pound a pack with a lighter.

Kept the mozzies away.

she should of banned all personnel imports of tobacco products, with proper punishment for smugglers.
make smokers pay.
id also be infavour of more tax on booze from shops, to raise revenue and make pubs more appealing

We have minimum alcohol pricing in Scotland. It began at 50p/unit, and is now at 65p. It was intended to reduce consumption of alcopops and cheap rubbish. And guess what? It didn't make the slightest difference, apart from punishing responsible drinkers to the tune of £4-odd per bottle of spirits.

Used to get a sleeve of 200 tabs Regal,B&H @ £8 on the warships in the 90's.I stopped smoking in 1995,thankfully.

I could buy a pint at the club on Friday for £3 ( if I drank that particular beer )

As for fags, it’s a disgrace how punitive the pricing is and no wonder folk buy a years worth on holiday.

It gives all the "Wrong Uns" another avenue for them to pursue. Meanwhile, the Gruberment thinks it is solving a problem.
