Using a privacy-focussed browser like Mullvad running the uBlock-origin widget will deliver ad-free viewing on the web. It might circumvent some other pop-up and third-party re-directs.
Go to the link you want to read that is behind a paywall and in the browser bar, after the "www" bit, type "archive.is/" (without the quotation marks obviously) and hit enter.
If the article already has an archived version (it probably will) you should be able to view it.
