Compact scope

Thoughts on a compact scope for a pcp I have just bought for the grandson, will be used for close squirrel around the feeders, pigeon and rats in the buildings. Needs to be able to focus close up and out to 40 yards. Recommendations?

Plenty of choice there these days, but I just bought element helix hdlr 4-16x50 two weeks ago and today was it's second time out . Quite impressed with glass and tracking is spot on tested on the range to 430 yards. Just one note decision making factor was an internet comments that they work really good with pard 007 ABSOLUTELY NOT THE CASE not compatible with pard at all. But fortunately it ended up on 270win and there it shines

I‘ve an Immersive Optics prismatic scope on my PCP - it’s tiny. It has a fixed magnification of x10 which sounds a lot but because it’s prismatic, it has a FOV similar to a 3x conventional scope. It bright and clear all the way to the edge too. The only thing that takes a little getting used to is the zero eye relief - however, I’m used to using a thermal spotter and NV with my eye pressed up against the rubber eyecup so was no problem for me.

I have been using one of these on a rifle with a Pard. It’s pretty good. At around €75 off AliExpress it doesn’t break the bank.it’s called a “Fire Wolf” 2-7x

Hawke Vantage 2x7x32 AO IR has a nice simple glass etched mil dot ret, for about £100 new and £65 ish second hand.

Hawke Airmax is a step up with a slightly different ret but again glass etched and AO. None-illuminated. More expensive, but available for around £110-120 SH.

Both are 1 inch tubes and available in 3x9x40 if you feel he may need a bit more mag……but TBH the x7 is sufficient at sub12 distance.

Rolls Royce version of that platform is the Optisan 3x12x32 on a 30mm tube and SF. Retail is north of £300 and about 200-220, SH.

All work fine with add on NV and are short, weigh next to nothing, with the Optisan being the heaviest at around 500g.

I’ve used them all at sub12 and still have an Airmax. I have the 3x12 Optisan on my WMR now.

Overall, I’d say the Airmax is the best compromise and would be ideal.

I use many hawke compact scopes to good effect on both sub 12 airguns and fac , hawke seem to work very well with the pard 007 add on nv unit.
Also use an optisan scope on .22 hornet with the pard, works very well, i am also in Northumberland if you would like to take a look through the scopes mentioned before making a decision.
ps, wish i could stop looking at your ad for the H&H, you will get hung !!

Cheers for the offer, been down to Bradford stalker today and bought a brocock pathfinder and put a MTC 4-16x40 on it. Grandsons going to be delighted, has a extendable stock so can make it short for him and in 2 seconds longer for me. Grey squirrels in Northumberland the main target

Really impressed with the wee Optisans - how you getting on with it on the WMR? Thinking of putting either a 3-12 or fixed 10 on my .22 rimfire.

Very well TBF. The smallish objective isn't an issue for me as even my .308 has no more than a 42 on it.

Decent enough glass and as mine was second hand very favourable price too. Mine is a used 3x12 with SF and with a NV add on, easily useable out to 100 even with a 32 mil objective. Perfect for any RF calibre TBH.

Brill, now to decide to stick the variable or fixed mag on it! Many thanks :thumb:

Digging up older post - how do you find these? Would they work on low recoil centre fire? Could you use it to 200yd?? Cheers

Hi BenBhoy, I’ve still got my 10x30 Immersive Optics scope on my air rifle - great little scope; hardly know it’s there. The glass on these scopes is very good - way better than the Hawke Sidewinder I briefly owned and clarity at hundreds of yards doesn’t fall off. As previously stated, field of view of my 10x scope is the same as a conventional 3x scope so finding my target is never an issue. I’ve not come across a situation where I thought I had too much magnification.
As for using one on a centrefire; possibly on a 17 Hornet/Fireball with a heavy barrel but not sure I’d like to try it on my 204R T3 Lite. The acid test would be put your current scope up to your eye and fire off a round. If you don’t walk away bruised it would more than likely be ok to use a zero eye relief scope.
Cheers
N

Whatever you get I'd say make sure it's got an ffp reticle so they can learn their holds without having to make sure they are on the right mag setting
