Controversial question are gun shops good enough

Pause for a moment and think what it must be like to have to deal with us lot day in, day out.
Pure purgatory.
Oh I dont know. I was always keen and happy to go in. It’s my hobby so I always get excited about buying new bits. Even when going in to buy a few rounds I knew I would treat myself to something extra. Few goodies on the counter Jack Pyke keyring pen knife springs to mind…..

My electrical wholesaler on the other hand I imagine they shudder when my moaning arse comes through the door 😂🫣

I’m lucky to have 6 gunshops within 45 minutes and it’s a 50/50 split…. The closest one doesn’t really ever have anything, the next closest the guy who is wedged behind the counter has the worst personal hygeine, the shop smells like an Indian train carriage, the next one is part of a farm and some of which is in the house - it’s complete bedlam especially if a shoot day is on.

The other three are great! Next closest always have what I want or something similar and if not do anything they can to get it, not only this but they guys who work there are great characters and the fishing section is excellent too, I thoroughly recommend KD Radcliffes, they are a proper gunsmith too.

After that I have Essex Gun at Fennes who are brilliant people and have a decent stock of most things and tend to be cheaper than anywhere else.

Lastly Eastern Sporting is somewhere that pretty much always has everything you’d need but the new store lacks the character of the old one..

I’m increasingly convinced there’s some neurodegenerative issue there, with clear decline over time. That level of erratic aggression and irrational vindictiveness just isn’t normal outside of bad novels about boarding schools!
Somebody should remind him to take his pills on time!

Indian train carriage killed me 😂😂😂😂

Trigger i live by this statement and I have never quibbled over paying a few quid more rather than going online where its cheaper.

I personally think it’s the problem that everyone these days wants a deal and generally wants cheaper rather than better - also that they can’t be rsed traveling which probably means that those businesses that do return calls and deliver excellent service are not getting loads more business than the ones given average or not even that good service

End of the day you go to the shop who stock what you need, even if it 200miles away.

Nothing in a gun shop can happen quickly, there is too much paperwork involved for simple purchases and unless it is completed at point of sale the books won’t balance and they will be shut down. It’s not the gunshops or owners fault. Several hours every day is simply wasted doing regulation paperwork.

Many dealers also treat strangers with a bit of suspicion, out of necessity, and once they get to know you, service also improves.

We are fortunate to have an excellent shop locally, friendly, excellent customer service, the works. I have chosen to leave, to come back later, several times in te past because they were busy with other customers and it would have taken too long. It’s a personalised service.

I do enjoy the conversation as well and don’t ever expect to spend less than an hour to pop in. Excellent customer service is what make a gunshop great, and there’s a few great ones out there

Most gun shops are run by shooting enthusiasts if they were not they would close as got to be a lot simpler and easier ways to make money.

My experience of buying my Fac air rifle 2 weeks ago was stress free.
Shooting Supplies in Bromsgrove placed a ad on Guntrader,I emailed them and got pictures & description of the rifle.
The following day I rang them, confirmed the condition(mint) & what came with it.I then rang my local RFD Keith(Lochens)on here to tell him what's happening.
3days later Keith gets in touch & I pick up a mint AA S510 US XS from him.
So my experience was no hassle & 2 RFD's who I highly recommend 👌

Nothing really constructive to add other than of the few gunshops Iv visited overseas the beretta one in nyc was a standout amazing experience. Typical us customer service don’t think I even had my fac at that point only my sgc but got the full treatment they brought out all sorts of custom doubles and pistols for their poor unarmed cousin to drool over the chap even said if I was still about next week he would happily take me “upstate to his shooting club”. Prices were eye watering though.

Still was great experience 🫡.

Before I started using my regular RFD I used to sometimes think I'd phoned the fruit farm opposite side of road... One example...

Me - "hi mate, I'm after some 32gr 204 ammo"

Shop - "hmmm don't think we've anything that heavy in that calibre, but I'll just check..." (Cue comedy static footsteps) "No, nothing that big I'm afraid. Do you like FX though??"

Cheerio 👋

I recently had cause to visit Clarkes of Walsham, in Suffolk.
I'd phoned loads of places looking for Federal Powershok 130grain .270, without luck. Someone suggested Clarkes, but I thought they were just a builder's merchants.
Phoned them, and yes, they had plenty in stock. They offered to ship them to their other store the next day for me to collect, but as I was heading back to North Wales next day that wasn't much help.
I said I'd drop by the shop at Walsham-le-Willows if I got a chance on my way, but if not never mind.
I did drop by, and found they'd put aside what I wanted, with my name on, just in case.
Excellent service.
They have a lovely Country Store there, and a really good range of ammo.
Big shout out for Clarkes from me!

Shops that provide service like that deserve to prosper. :thumb:

By way of total contrast one of the biggest gun shops in the country and local to me is the absolute opposite. They are renowned for telling telephone enquiry customers that they definitely have the goods in store and will set them aside for them while they travel some distance to collect. Only for the customer to arrive and be greeted with the usual "Oh sorry one of the other staff has just sold it", or alternatively you find that it's nothing like what you asked for. And they wonder why the shop is avoided by local shooters!
