CWD Tusks...... this way? ....or that?

I’ve been cleaning up a CWD head to mount it after it’s been left outside to clean off. Trouble is... the skull came with the tusks separate and not having done one before, I’ve no idea which way round the tusks go so thought it better to ask before they got anywhere near glue. :-|

No lower jaw unfortunately...... might have made the decision easier.

Any clues gratefully received...... take your pic...

(They’re definitely in different ways round in the pics as there’s plenty of wiggle room in there )

Instead of glueing them in, stuff some whitetack (like bluetack but, erm, lacking the blue) in the sockets and bed the tusks into that. You can then rearrange them to your heart's content.

I have used double sided sticky tape to stick the teeth into mine, Have not fallen out yet 👍View attachment 170860

Before seeing Rizla’s photo of his shelf support mount I was wondering how to fix the skull to the shield and had thought about a bit of polished brass rod to hold it clear.....or the top bit of a ‘flying’ brass coat peg.

Taking the shelf support idea in a different direction, I’m now thinking about a triangle of oak to sit the head at an angle off the face of the shield.

Great ideas and photos chaps..... much appreciated :thumb:

Fixing the skull to the wedge threw me a bit... I’ve discovered that No Nails doesn’t set had after filling the cranium with it and inserting a nice shiny size 14 brass screw in there.....so that all had to come out again.

Tried various hollow wall fittings without gout any joy there and a flash of inspiration has resulted in a 6mm wing nut going in the ‘ole followed by a quick jiggle to get the machine screw into that “the wrong way up“ so it wedges itself in there as it’s tightened. Reeesult!

Thank you all for your help and inspiration gentleman, much appreciated :thumb:

Did you peroxid it?..J
Yep...... it had been left out in the wood for the bugs to clean it off for I don’t know how long, so it was pretty stained when I got it with just bits of fur in every orifice. It had lost a couple of teeth and the tusks just fell out. No lower jaw and the bones had started to separate..

So into the large saucepan with a Fairy non-bio pod and brought to a simmering soft rolling boil for an hour... I added a squirt of bleach and later, for good measure, a spoonful of Vanish Oxy Action.... big mistake! It immediately boiled over and spread white foam all over the cooker top.:rofl:

I left it to carry on soaking for a couple of days..... then out, cleaned out the remaining bits of hair, bugs, etc covered it in a thin layer of cotton wool, soaked that in peroxide from the chemists and wrapped it in foil over night. Next morning it was rinsed off and left to dry in the sun. The soaked cotton wool is squeaZee out back into the bottle towards next time.

I didn’t need to give it a jet wash which means the fine bone honeycomb is still there in the facial orifices...one good thing for being left out to clean off.

I ran some super glue into the loose joints and dulled that down with a light touch of wire wool.

It got whiter as it dried and the bone lost the translucency but I think these left to clean off heads don’t come up as white as fresh heads. Probably a more natural look though.
