I did try the poor mans route. Yes it was lighter, but its the hardness and the polish and angle of the surfaces that really make the difference. I tried all these and in the end bought the Timney.
A lighter spring and some aluminum roofing tape (wrapped around the crossbar, to reduce sear engagement) , and Bob's your uncle. Stupid simple and works. ...Which means it isn't stupid.
