De priming on a press. What do I need?

Hi All,

I'm new to reloading and have a question. Do standard rifle die sets de prime or do I need a separate de primer for my press? I've checked manufacturer descriptions and it's not clear! Many thanks

Yes, resizing dies will deprime at the same time. There are some dies that won't, but it should be clear that they don't.
Lee also make a universal depriming die that only deprimes - useful if you want to deprime your brass before cleaning it, without potentially scuffing your die or workhardening the brass.

As everyone has said the full length resizing die has a protruding pin below the expanding ball that will push out a spent primer.
Here is a pic of one on ebay linky ...

This pin pushes the primer out of the head.
You can also get a seperate depriming die (i have one) which lets me push out the primer prior to tumbling/resixing etc. This is an empty tube with a parallel pin that fits through the case neck of all of my calibers
Your press should come with a spent primer catcher too as they go everywhere.

the standard die has a de-caping pin and an expander in one . personally dislike them as they have a tendency to cock the neck out of true.
instead i de prime in a separate operation then tumble. after that sizing is done with a bushing die or straight expander

And if after sizing you trim/chamfer/debur the case mouth, do you clean/tumble to remove swarf ?

i do not but dirty or burred cases into my dies full stop . i was describing the removal of primers and sizing not the in between bits. primers out then into cleaning , its a separate process! corn cob media

lee universal decapping die to deprime, then clean, then size, then trim, then stand upside down so the head is at the top and neck at bottom, then prime then finaly powder and bullet seated in one step before admiring the nice shiny uniform box.

you can de-prime at most basic with just the depriming pin and a block with a hole in it .
most sizing dies have a rugby ball expander with a small section of drill rod below to pop the primer out during re sizing though ( many dislike the sytem as the button can knock necks off centre.
you can purchase sepparate dies that just knock out the spent primer ( this is what i do ) then i size with a range of different bushings (from the outside of the neck ) it only needs 2 thousands grip (using the appropriate brass is important) regarding differences in brass walls
