Deer as vermin??

Circumstances when a shotgun can be used on deer(England and Wales)

When damage is be done to cultivated land, pasture or enclosed woodland.

Who may do so.

A member of the occupiers household normally resident on the land.
Any person in ordinary service of the occupier of the land.
Any person having the right to take or kill deer on the land
Any person acting with written authority of a person having that right.


Subject to the occupier having
Reasonable grounds for believing the same species were causing or had caused damage to crops , vegetables, fruit or growing timber or other property.

Further damage was likely to be caused and was likely to be serious.

The action was necessary to prevent any such damage.
 
This permitted use of shotguns is a useful tool for farmers and other growers to use in an emergency. I suspect that the legislators at the time may have had that in mind. But despite historical usage, I would have thought the best thing these days would be to have a proper plan in place to control the deer and therefore their effect on livelihoods.
